At an elevation of 852 metres, Revest-Les-Roches lies at the foot of Mont Vial. The mountain village overlooks the lower valleys of the Var and Estéron. At the same time, the municipal territory rises from the Var to near the 1,550-metre summit. This range of elevations shapes the character of the place: the village and mountain landscape belong to different levels of the destination.
Mont Vial, hiking and nature
Mont Vial reaches 1,550 metres. From the summit, sweeping views extend across the Alpes-Maritimes and the Mediterranean, sometimes as far as Corsica. The Balme du Vial cave lies on the northern approach to the Mont Vial hiking route.
Olive trees grow on the steep slopes. Revest-Les-Roches is also within the ZNIEFF âVallĂ©e de l'Esteron oriental d'Aiglun Ă Giletteâ, a Type 2 ecological inventory area of ecological, faunal and floral interest. The ZNIEFF classification adds a natural-history perspective to the visible landscape.
Church and village history
The parish church of Saint-Laurent was first mentioned in 1091. Much of the present building dates from later periods; extensive work was carried out in 1841 and 1846 during the Sardinian restoration. The year 1091 therefore marks the first mention, not the construction of the present building as a whole. The church contains numerous notable paintings dated 1647 and 1667. One of them, an oil painting executed in 1647 by Jacques Viany of Vence, depicts the deacons Saint-Laurent, Etienne and Vincent. The stone-carved holy water font is another distinctive feature: it depicts a face and dates from the 12th or 13th century.
The 15th-century Maison Ă arcades stands in the village square. It was restored and completely plastered in the 19th century. Three oratories are still visible in the village: Saint-Jean, Sainte Claire and the Vierge Marie.
The communal bread oven was donated by twelve residents in 1932. Since then, it has been used both to meet residentsâ needs and by successive baker-grocers. The FĂȘte du pain is also associated with the oven.
ChĂȘne du Villar and Verticale Haut Vial
The ChĂȘne du Villar is over 800 years old and was awarded the âArbre Remarquableâ designation by the A.B.R.E.S. association in 2012. The tree serves as the starting point for the Verticale Haut Vial, a trail race that starts in the village and is organised annually by the municipality and its associations. As part of the event, children aged 3 to 12 can take part in a free obstacle course through the village. Event details may change from one edition to the next; check the current date and programme before your trip.
