Andon is surrounded by forests, mountains and vast high plateaus; in summer, you can hike across the plateaus. The medieval Castellaras and a variety of route options also give your trip a clear focus. If you’re deciding what suits your stay, you can compare route length, circular or out-and-back routes, and the kind of experience you’re looking for.

High plateaus and different route options

The La Moulière–L’Audibergue N°27 route starts in La Moulière and is an 8.5-kilometre circular trail. After the climb, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the mountain ridges. The route description therefore combines a clearly stated distance and a circular format with a landscape highlight. This is a different kind of route planning from a hike to a specific destination and back again.

The route to the ruins of Castellaras is one example: this very easy out-and-back hike is 2.5 kilometres long and starts at the car park at Col du Castellaras in Andon. The differences are easy to see when comparing the two: here, a short distance, a very easy rating and a return to the starting point contrast with an 8.5-kilometre circular trail. This makes it easier to choose based on route type and length, without treating both trails as the same kind of outing.

Castellaras: medieval castle and views

The Castellaras de Thorenc in Andon is an archaeological site and a fortified medieval castle. Its main construction phases date to the 13th and 14th centuries. The route from the car park at Col du Castellaras leads to the ruins. From the Castellaras site, you can see across the Andon plain and the varied landscape of the Haut Pays. This destination brings together a specific historic site and expansive views of the landscape.

Wildlife watching and other activities

The Réserve Biologique des Monts d’Azur is a 700-hectare wildlife reserve in Thorenc, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. European bison and Przewalski’s horses live there and can be observed. Guided safaris are available on foot, by horse-drawn carriage, on snowshoes and by sled. These different formats let you choose how you’d like to experience this wildlife reserve.

Other activity options can be found at the locations mentioned: La Moulière is known for mountain biking trails, often designed for experienced riders; hiking and trail-running activities are also offered there. The L’Audibergue resort offers alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. Alongside hikes across the high plateaus, there are therefore various sporting options, though this does not mean all activities share a single route.

In Thorenc, within the municipality of Andon, visitors can tour the Ferme de l’Escaillon. The farm sells exclusively through direct sales. This is a different kind of visit from a hike or wildlife-watching trip: the farm itself is the main attraction.

Cultural tradition in Canaux

The Saint-Hubert Chapel stands in the centre of Canaux. It is associated with the blessing of animals during the Saint-Hubert celebration. This cultural connection differs from the hiking and nature themes: the focus is a celebratory tradition linked to the village and its chapel.
