At an altitude of 2,300 metres, Les Balcons d’Auron offers a 360-degree panorama of the resort and the surrounding peaks. In Saint-Etienne-De-Tinée, this viewpoint is complemented by a waterside trail and cultural sites with different historical themes.
Circular Trails Between Panoramas and Water
Les Balcons d’Auron is a 2.5-kilometre circular trail that returns to its starting point. Along the route are ten discreetly designed interpretation areas. The trail is accessible from both Saint-Etienne-De-Tinée and the resort of Auron. From Saint-Etienne-De-Tinée, it is considered an easy route; the estimated time is about one hour, with 150 metres of elevation gain. In July and August, access is via the Télécabine de la Pinatelle and the Lieuson chairlift.
The trails offer different points of reference to help you choose: Les Balcons d’Auron combines a defined distance and walking time with views of the resort and peaks. Those more interested in water, fountains, and their surroundings will find a different focus on the Sentier de l’Eau. The two circular trails can therefore be chosen according to your preferred focus, without requiring a set order.
The Sentier de l’Eau is a circular trail in Saint-Etienne-De-Tinée. Its information panels cover water, irrigation channels, the history of the fountains, architecture, and nature. Along the banks of the Tinée, the trail features a landscaped stream with trout, a mill, wooden channels, water wheels, and water-retention areas. Natural features and structures shaped by water are presented side by side.
The Sentier de l’Eau also leads to a viewpoint and a waterfall. It is considered suitable for everyone, including those with strollers, and is freely accessible during the summer season. As access conditions may vary seasonally depending on local circumstances, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
Chapel, Museum, and Local History
The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien stands at the southern entrance to the village. It was built in the 15th century as protection against plague epidemics and was listed as a historic monument in 1914. Its frescoes date from around 1485–1490 and were created by the Piedmontese masters Giovanni Baleison and Giovanni Canavesio. The chapel’s construction history and frescoes point to different aspects: its period of construction and protective purpose on the one hand, and the later dating of the paintings on the other.
The Musée des Traditions Stephanoises illustrates what life in Saint-Etienne-De-Tinée was like in the past. Individual tours are available on request; confirm arrangements for your preferred date in advance. The Couvent des Trinitaires is also part of the village’s historical landscape: it was founded in the 17th century. Together, the chapel, museum, and convent offer a reason to explore the local history as well as the circular trails during your stay.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
To plan your visit, you can first decide what you would most like to discover: the panorama from Les Balcons d’Auron, the waterscape and its explanatory panels, or the history of the chapel, museum, and convent. The stated distances and approximate duration help you get a clear idea of Les Balcons d’Auron. On the Sentier de l’Eau, the focus is instead on the trail’s themes and stops.
