Explore Fontan through three themes: sacred architecture, routes on foot and by bike, and a small museum about the village’s past. Each offers a different focus: historic buildings bring together several dates and styles, while a hiking trail connects three hamlets and EuroVelo 8 runs through several places in the Roya Valley. This lets you decide in advance whether you want culture or outdoor activity to take centre stage during your visit.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

The Church of Notre-Dame de la Visitation in Fontan was consecrated in 1632; the Chapelle Saint-Jacques des Pénitents blancs was completed in 1845. Together, they offer two historical reference points: a consecration and a completion date. The church is open to the public daily, with free admission. Access may change during ceremonies or services, so check locally before making a visit to the church a firm part of your plans.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Rosaire in Berghe inférieur is a rural chapel characteristic of the 18th-century Valléan Baroque tradition. The Église Notre-Dame de la Merci de Berghe Supérieur is considered a regionally interesting example of a rural chapel in the rustic Baroque style. The first is notable for its place in the historically dated Valléan tradition, while the second is notable for its rustic Baroque style.

The small museum “Fontan and its inhabitants through the ages” displays objects from Fontan’s past and explores their role in residents’ lives. Unlike the churches and chapels, the focus here is on objects and what they meant to local people. If you plan to visit the museum, check opening hours in advance.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

A yellow-marked hiking trail listed in the PDIPR connects Berghe inférieur, Berghe supérieur and Granile. Markings and listings may change, so check the current status before setting out. The Circuit de la Céva and the Chemin de Groa are also hiking trails associated with Fontan.

The Sentier botanique in Fontan includes a shaded section with chestnut trees that are several centuries old. It offers a different perspective on the area from the hiking trails, whose names or connections between hamlets are their main features.

For cycling, EuroVelo 8, “La Méditerranée à vélo,” runs through the Roya Valley via Breil, Saorge, Fontan and Tende, as far as the Col de Tende. Unlike the route connecting the hamlets, this cycling route passes through several places in the valley. Check the route and any restrictions before setting out.

Practical Information

Fontan-Saorge station is an outdoor-accessible stop with covered platforms; there are no ticket machines. Check current rail conditions before travelling, as facilities may change.
