A village on a rocky mountain ridge, a complex border history and hiking trails with distinctive route features define Sauze. The main village lies at an altitude of 1,365 metres above the upper Var Valley. If you are considering the village as a destination, here is a concise overview of its landscape, history and routes.

Location and Character

The municipality covers 2,777 hectares and extends from 780 to 2,520 metres in altitude; Mont Saint-Honorat lies to the west. The main village itself is situated at 1,365 metres on a rocky ridge above the upper Var Valley. These elevation figures show the range within the municipality, while the ridge-top location describes the character of the village.

The approach is also shaped by the hillside setting: a winding road climbs above Guillaumes, opening up panoramic views along the way. This is a practical detail for planning your trip, though it does not indicate a specific journey time.

Village History and Natural Surroundings

Sauze was first mentioned in the first half of the 13th century as a fortified settlement. It included a village and a church, which was mentioned in 1351. From 1388, Sauze was a Savoyard enclave above the territories of Guillaumes. Its border location and the wars between France and the House of Savoy shaped the history of the village.

Historically, agriculture included growing wheat, rye and lentils, as well as livestock farming. These activities contributed to a measure of prosperity until the mid-19th century. Notre-Dame de la Colle is considered an emblematic building in the history and identity of the village; its restoration was inaugurated in August 2026.

Sauze is also part of the 3,384-hectare Natura 2000 site “Sites à chauves-souris - Castellet-Les-Sausses et Gorges de Daluis”. Seventy percent of the site lies in the Alpes-Maritimes department. This places Sauze not only in the context of a village, but also within a wider natural area.

Hikes Around Sauze

The Les hameaux de Sauze route starts in the village and is an easy, signposted PR out-and-back hike. It covers 8.5 kilometres and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes on foot. The starting point, route type and approximate duration help you estimate how much time to set aside for this hike during your stay.

The Tour des Gorges de Daluis also leads to Sauze: the marked access route into the village follows trail markers 83a, 83 and 81. From the square in Sauze, the trail passes a chapel and the hamlet of Sauze Vieux. If you plan this hike, check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Balcons du Val d'Entraunes route offers a different kind of trail: it follows a narrow forest track to the Moulins de Sauze. Check the terrain conditions before setting out here too. The routes therefore differ in their specific features: from a numbered out-and-back hike to a route following trail markers or a narrow track.
