Water sports on the Erdre, protected wetlands and historic buildings offer a variety of themes for a trip to Sucé-Sur-Erdre. You can plan your stay around activities on the water, nature watching or architectural history. For several water-based activities, it is also a good idea to check seasonal availability.
Wetlands and nature watching
The regional Tourbière de Logné nature reserve lies on the left bank of the Erdre and extends across the municipalities of Carquefou and Sucé-Sur-Erdre. It is designated as an Espace naturel sensible (ENS) and comprises bog, fen and peat-rich woodland. There is a nature trail at the Tourbière. However, the reserve is not open to the public for unrestricted access; the team offers guided visits every year. If you would like to experience this natural area, plan a guided visit and check the available dates in advance.
The Plaines de Mazerolles offer a different setting: this protected wetland lies within the classified Vallée de l’Erdre area and a Natura 2000 zone. The Plaines are open for walks by the water, fishing and picnics. You can observe 169 bird species there, including many migratory birds. Unlike the Tourbière, which can only be visited as part of a guided tour, the Plaines are a destination for the water-based activities mentioned above. Birdwatching adds a distinct focus to the landscape, without requiring you to treat the Tourbière and its specific access arrangements as the same kind of destination.
Water sports on the Erdre
The municipal Base nautique de Mazerolles offers various water sports to the general public and school groups. Check availability and seasonal opening before your trip. Kayaks and canoes can be rented in the harbour area for trips on the Erdre; rentals may be seasonal. At the beaches along the Erdre, you can go paddleboarding from the town centre and from Mazerolles. You can also board licence-free houseboats in Sucé-Sur-Erdre. For these activities, it is also advisable to check seasonal conditions and availability in advance.
The information varies by activity and starting point: kayaks and canoes are available in the harbour area, the beaches along the Erdre are mentioned for paddleboarding, and houseboats can be boarded in Sucé-Sur-Erdre. This helps you sort the various water-based activities according to the kind of experience you want, rather than treating them as a single offering.
Cycling routes: circular or linear
There are two differently described options for a bike ride. The Sucé-sur-Erdre / Rive Gauche cycling loop is 14 km long and rated very easy to easy. La Vélodyssée passes through Sucé-Sur-Erdre, where it offers 15 km of dedicated route. So the comparison is not just about distance: one option is a loop, while the other is a linear route. You can first decide which route format better suits your plans. Before setting off, check the current signage for the cycling loop and the route conditions on La Vélodyssée.
Manor houses, châteaux and local history
The architectural history also offers several clearly distinct themes. The Manoir de la Châtaigneraie was built in 1860 in the Palladian style; a park adjoins the manor house. The Tour Gaillard dates from the 16th century and was built by Protestants. It remained an important Protestant site until 1685. The two buildings therefore represent different historical contexts: the architecture of a 19th-century manor house and the Protestant history of the Tour Gaillard.
The Château de Chavagne is a late-medieval manor house that was expanded in the 17th century by families from parliamentary circles and by local notables, including the Descartes. It is partially protected as a Monument historique. The protection covers the entire manor house as well as the façades and roofs of its outbuildings. The main building phase of the Château de Launay took place in the 18th century; this château is also partially protected as a Monument historique, with its façades and roofs under protection. The building phases and the stated scope of protection for each provide two specific ways to understand the châteaux in their historical context.
Whether you want to focus on nature watching, activities on the water, cycling or architectural history, Sucé-Sur-Erdre offers different themes for planning your trip. When making your choice, take into account the Tourbière’s access arrangements and the seasonal information for water-based activities.
