Cheix-En-Retz offers two distinct ways to explore the area: the marshes and banks of the Acheneau, and a history of buildings and local life stretching from Roman coins to 19th-century churches. At La Pierre Tremblante, a large gneiss slab meets the cautious interpretation that it may be the remains of a megalith. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between public attractions and private property: Château de Bois-Corbeau is not open to the public, even though a walking trail passes nearby.

The Acheneau and La Pierre Tremblante

The Circuit de la Pierre Tremblante runs along the marshes and banks of the Acheneau. Visitors can observe a wide variety of animal species there, although sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The walking trail also passes near Château de Bois-Corbeau. The estate is privately owned and is not open to the public. The trail’s proximity does not provide access to the château.

La Pierre Tremblante, a large gneiss slab, lies on the banks of the Acheneau. It may be the remains of a megalith; this interpretation is uncertain. La Pierre Tremblante can be visited freely by individuals and groups, although local access conditions may vary. Here, a specific geological feature sits alongside a cautiously worded cultural and historical interpretation.

River landscapes and fishing

During the Balade en Toue, local residents who know the area guide visitors through the Acheneau marshes. They explain the history, landscapes and hydrology, as well as the fauna, agriculture and fishing. The focus may vary depending on the departure and provider. This guided excursion directs attention not only to the landscape, but also to its natural and agricultural uses.

The La Pierre Tremblante fishing area is on the Acheneau and is directly accessible by vehicle. It includes an area for overnight carp fishing. The fishing area is accessible to people with reduced mobility; confirm the conditions locally before travelling. Weather, maintenance work or temporary restrictions may affect access. Before fishing, also check the regulations in force and any permits required. Access and fishing rules are two separate points to consider: direct accessibility does not indicate the conditions that apply to fishing.

Architectural history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century

The chapel of Château de Bois-Corbeau is a major 12th-century Romanesque building, built by monks from Sainte-Marie-de-Pornic Abbey. The oldest part of the château dates from the 14th century. These dates refer to different parts of the complex: the chapel is older than the oldest section of the château.

Église Saint-Martin tells the story of a different building phase. In its present form, it dates from 1856 and was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style to plans by the architect Joseph-Fleury Chenantais, after the medieval church was destroyed during the Revolution. The 12th-century granite holy-water stoup is one of the few surviving elements of the church from that period. The 1856 chancel window depicts three episodes from the life of Saint Martin: his charity, the founding of the monastery at Ligugé and his role as bishop of Tours. Thus, the church brings together 19th-century building history, an older surviving feature and a sequence of images depicting the saint.

Roman coins and pilgrimage history

Nearly 800 Roman coins were discovered at Pont du Pilon in Cheix-En-Retz in 1838. They date from approximately 27 BC to AD 238. The find links a specific place and a precise year of discovery with a broad span of ancient history. Le Pilon also points to the historic use of the route: the village was a very old stopping place used by pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela. A Roman-era archaeological find and the history of pilgrimage thus offer two distinct historical points of reference.
