In Mouzillon, vineyard slopes, Muscadet and the green landscape along the Sanguèze come together with distinctive cultural sites. Three themes provide a clear focus for planning your trip: winegrowing, river landscapes and local heritage. Particularly distinctive is the Pont Gallo romain: its current historical classification may come as a surprise, as it is considered more a bridge from the early Middle Ages than a structure from Roman times. A circular route leads through vineyards and hamlets, while a wine estate offers information about winegrowing and themed tastings. This lets you choose what to discover in Mouzillon based on what matters to you during your stay.
The Sanguèze, Vineyards and Circular Route
The Sanguèze runs through Mouzillon on its course through the Nantes wine-growing area and joins the Sèvre Nantaise near Le Pallet. Along the river, the landscape is natural, peaceful and green; the vineyard slopes add another element to the riverside scenery. The “Boucle Circuit Gallo-Romain” circular route passes through vineyards and hamlets and follows a wooded stretch along the Sanguèze. Its vineyard panoramas are particularly striking near Moulin Buzard. The route also passes through the neighbouring commune of Vallet. It therefore offers contrasting landscapes: vineyard views on one hand and a wooded riverside stretch on the other. These specific highlights can help you decide whether you’d prefer to explore Mouzillon through its wine-growing landscape or along the river.
The Bridge and Local Heritage
The Pont Gallo romain was fully restored in 2018 and provides a safe crossing for pedestrians. In 2026, individual visits without a guide are free of charge. Its four arches are unequal in size; each pier is flanked by a projecting spur. Its current classification as a bridge from the early Middle Ages therefore differs from the Roman period suggested by its name.
The Eglise Saint-Martin de Vertou in Mouzillon houses the 1920 painting “L'hommage aux morts de la paroisse de Mouzillon” by Pierre Roy, an internationally known surrealist painter from Nantes. Access to the painting depends on the church’s opening arrangements. Mouzillon’s heritage also includes the medieval Fontaine Saint-Julien. It is some distance from the bridge, so don’t plan to visit the two sites as if they were right next to each other.
Beyond individual buildings, the “Raconte-moi Mouzillon” association promotes local heritage through activities, discoveries, events and publications. Exploring Mouzillon’s history can therefore involve more than looking at its buildings, offering other ways to engage with local culture.
Muscadet, Winegrowing and Regional Products
Mouzillon’s wine-growing identity includes Muscadet, a local wine available for tasting in the area. Domaine de la Grange Hardy welcomes individuals and groups for themed food-and-wine experiences. It provides information about the Nantes wine-growing area, as well as the estate’s growing methods and winemaking. Themed tastings pair wines with regional products. The offerings appeal to different interests: the information focuses on winegrowing and production, while the tastings highlight the pairing with regional products. Check the availability of themed tastings before your trip.
Music is also part of Mouzillon’s events calendar: the “Une Nuit en Muscadet” festival takes place every year, showcases products from the Vignoble Nantais and has been held in Mouzillon since 2012. Alongside the wine-growing and heritage experiences, it offers another perspective on the area without making your stay revolve around a single theme.
