Donges offers a variety of reasons to stay: circular trails showcase the landscape and wildlife, while historic buildings offer insights of their own. When choosing nature trails, it is worth considering their different focuses: a panorama of the Loire Valley, opportunities for birdwatching and a viewpoint overlooking the Loire offer different experiences.

Circular trails with different focuses

The “Les Marais de Maca” circular trail offers a surprising panoramic view of the Loire Valley and its natural and industrial surroundings. Nature and industry are equally part of the view here. If you do not want to reduce the landscape to a purely natural setting, this trail offers a distinctive perspective.

The “Le Coin Carré” circular trail focuses on opportunities to observe herons, ibises, egrets and other marsh birds. The trail is suitable for the whole family. This gives it a different focus from “Les Marais de Maca”: here, the emphasis is on the wildlife along the trail, while the other trail offers sweeping views of the valley and its surroundings.

The “Revin” circular trail focuses on wading birds and other shorebirds. It adds another dimension to the birdwatching opportunities on the “Le Coin Carré” trail.

Views of the Loire from the Sémaphore de la Taillée

The Sémaphore de la Taillée is an exceptional viewpoint overlooking the Loire. It is accessible year-round, free of charge, on foot or by bicycle. Weather conditions may restrict access to the top; bear this in mind if you plan to visit the viewpoint. Compared with the panorama from the “Les Marais de Maca” circular trail, the Sémaphore offers another clearly identified viewpoint over the Loire.

The manor house and chapel: different historical connections

The Manoir de la Hélardière is a Breton manor farm with an enclosed courtyard, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century. Its features include a grand hall with an exposed roof structure and a chapel. The parts of the manor house protected as a French historic monument were listed on 29 March 2012. The date of construction and the date of its protected status therefore refer to two different points in time.

The manor house hosts temporary exhibitions open to the public and also has an artist’s studio. Sculptures by the owner can be discovered in the park. As the exhibition programme may change, it is a good idea to check the current exhibition dates before your visit. The Chapelle de Bonne Nouvelle offers another historical point of interest: it dates from the 17th century and is therefore younger than the manor farm.

A digital experience and close encounters with animals

“Sortilège en Brière” is a family-friendly digital experience that takes place directly on your smartphone. It adds a different format to the landscape and historical attractions, without making a hike the main focus.

La Ferme Extraordinaire is an educational farm and sanctuary for farm animals. Visitors can spend time in close contact with the animals. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours and activities in advance.

When planning your stay, you can weigh up the different options: views and landscapes, birdwatching, architectural history or an experience with animals. This way, your choice stays focused on the genuinely different experiences Donges has to offer.
