In Pont-Saint-Martin, nature, cycling and local history can be explored as distinct themes. The Marais de l’île is a specific point of interest on the Ognon.

Wetland and birdwatching

The Marais de l’île is a 52-hectare wetland crossed by the Ognon. It is located very close to the centre of Pont-Saint-Martin. An observation point for watching numerous birds is situated at the marsh on the north bank of the Ognon. The river, wetland and birdwatching can thus be understood in relation to one another: the Ognon crosses the area, and the observation point is on its north bank.

Parts of the Marais de l’île lie within Natura 2000 perimeters, a classified protected-area perimeter and Ramsar perimeters. These protections apply to parts of the wetland, not to the entire area as a whole. Both its size and the limited extent of the protected perimeters are therefore relevant to understanding this natural area.

Another option for families is the educational trail on the Prés Moreau site, which is considered suitable for families. This offers different ways to experience nature: birdwatching at the marsh and an educational trail at Prés Moreau. Families planning a visit can make this trail, which is specifically described as family-friendly, a focus of their stay.

Cycling circuit and paths along the Ognon

The Ognon cycling route is a circular route from Parc de la Filée to the Marais de l’île. These two landmarks define the route, whose focus is a circuit by bicycle. It differs from the Quai des Romains circuit, which follows the Ognon and offers a way to discover the heritage and history of the municipality of Pont-Saint-Martin.

The two routes therefore offer different experiences: the Ognon cycling route focuses on cycling and connecting Parc de la Filée with the Marais de l’île. The Quai des Romains circuit directs attention to the river and to the municipality’s heritage and history. When choosing between them, you can consider the distinct focus of each route.

Crossing the Ognon is a separate practical consideration: the chain ferry crosses the river using human power, and bicycles can be taken aboard. It operates seasonally. Check the operating conditions before travelling if you plan to use this crossing.

Architectural history and heritage protection

The historic buildings also have different points of interest. Château de la Rairie in Pont-Saint-Martin has been protected as a historic monument since 23 January 1989. Château du Plessis is partly protected as a historic monument. The scope of protection therefore differs: Château de la Rairie is protected as a historic monument, whereas protection of Château du Plessis expressly covers only part of the building.

The new Saint-Martin church was built from 1844 to 1860 and consecrated in 1862. The construction period and consecration mark two separate stages in its history. The timeline is therefore clear: construction was followed by consecration two years after the work was completed.

If you are looking for a hotel in Pont-Saint-Martin, you can plan your stay around whether birdwatching, the cycling circuit or the history of the municipality is your main interest.
