The Forge Neuve is a tangible starting point for discovering the history of forging in Moisdon-La-Rivière. The former site of industrial forges dating from the 17th century is now open to the public; seasonal access conditions may apply.
Forge History and Church Architecture
The Musée des Forges is housed in a former coal-storage building at the Forge Neuve, now converted into a museum. It offers an engaging, hands-on introduction to the history of mining and work in the forges from the 17th to the 19th century. The building’s former use and the museum’s historical themes are therefore closely connected. For travellers especially interested in mining and forging, this is a clear cultural highlight.
The Église Saint-Jouin is a Romanesque fortified church and is listed as a historic monument. The municipality describes it as the only fortified church in the département. It broadens the historical perspective to include church architecture, making it thematically distinct from the Musée des Forges.
Trails with Different Features
The Sentier du Prince combines a short, specified walking time with varied scenery: the route is 2 km long and takes 30 minutes. It passes through rocky and wooded areas and offers panoramic views in a landscape shaped by the former forges. The trail is open year-round; separate seasonal official restrictions may nevertheless apply. Before setting out, check whether any such restrictions are currently in effect.
The Sentier Farinel is an easy 3.5 km walking trail with a walking time of 45 minutes. As a connecting trail, it leads to the Forge Neuve and runs alongside the Don. Temporary weather-related access restrictions may apply; check current conditions before setting off.
In direct comparison, the Farinel is 1.5 km longer than the Prince, and takes 15 minutes longer to walk. At the same time, it is classed as an easy walking trail and serves as a connection to the Forge Neuve. This lets you weigh up the time required, difficulty rating and connection to the Forge Neuve when choosing a trail.
The Sentier La Lande du Don runs along the banks of the Don below extensive shale plateaus and bears the FFRandonnée national label. Compared with the rocky and wooded sections of the Sentier du Prince, it offers a different kind of scenery. A safety-related change was made to the trail in 2026. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
