Nature, trails and history in Saint-Herblon
The Circuit de la Fontaine Ferrugineuse, the Marais de Grée and historic buildings give Saint-Herblon a distinctive character. Another loop trail leads to the Moulin de la Challoire; there is also a permanent orienteering course in the town centre. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a hike with a known distance, a loop trail with notable landscape features, and different types of orienteering.
The Marais de Grée
The Marais de Grée is a wetland between Ancenis and Saint-Herblon that periodically dries out. It can cover an area of up to 450 hectares; this figure describes its possible maximum size. Its diverse flora and fauna include numerous migratory birds. Both the wetland’s changing extent and its plant and animal life are among its defining features. The birdwatching observatory offers panoramic views. The footpath there starts at the Maison du marais, linking the viewpoint to a clearly identified starting point.
Walking trails and landscape
The Circuit de la Fontaine Ferrugineuse is 6.2 kilometres long and passes through Saint-Herblon. Green lanes, rolling landscapes and unspoilt nature shape the route. Benches along the way provide places to take a break. This makes for a clear combination when planning your day: the distance gives you a concrete measure of the route, while the benches make it possible to stop along the way.
Another route idea is the loop trail to the Moulin de la Challoire. It passes through the Vallon de la Saugère and along a section of the stream; it also follows a picturesque sunken lane by the rock face. The Circuit de la Fontaine Ferrugineuse is defined by its distance and benches, while the loop to the Moulin is characterised by its valley, stream and rock formations. You can therefore distinguish between the two trails based on the features described for each.
Church, castle remains and windmill
The parish church of Saint-Herblon was destroyed by fire on 6 August 1899 and rebuilt in the following years by the architect Bougouin. The sequence of events—destruction followed by reconstruction—is central to its story. Châteaufromont is one of the early castles of which only traces remain. The Moulin de la Challoire is a renovated former windmill. These examples represent different historical associations: the rebuilding of a church, the surviving traces of an early castle and a restored building once used for technical purposes.
Orienteering in the town centre
The Parcours Permanent d’Orientation – Vair-sur-Loire (Saint-Herblon) is located in a leisure area in the town centre. It offers classic orienteering courses, variations with even- and odd-numbered checkpoints, as well as star and question courses. This gives you several forms of orienteering to choose from. If you would rather focus on a structured activity than a hike, these course formats offer a distinct option.
