Salt marshes, three ponds and a historic walking trail offer different ways to explore the landscape and local history of Bourgneuf-en-Retz. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the conditions for these activities: the salt marshes are subject to seasonal schedules and reservations, while access to one of the pond trails depends on water from winter rainfall draining away. This lets you plan your stay around a suitable focus without committing to a fixed itinerary.

Salt and Water Landscapes

Les Etangs de Bourgneuf consists of three ponds designed for fishing, walks and relaxation; the site is open year-round. These three activities are available side by side: you can enjoy the pond landscape and decide for yourself whether a walk, fishing or relaxation is your priority.

The salt marshes offer a different way to experience the landscape: during a visit, you will learn how seawater flows through various basins and crystallizes into salt. Tours are available daily from May 1 to October 30 by reservation at 10:30 a.m. The seasonal schedule may change, so check it before your trip. Depending on the salt producer’s work schedule, free 20-minute short tours are also available. The regular tour and these shorter visits therefore differ both in duration and in how much they depend on the work schedule.

Walks with Different Conditions

It is also worth checking the details of each route. The circular trails around the first and second ponds are open for walking year-round. Access to the trail around the third pond depends on water from winter rainfall having drained away. The pond walks therefore do not all have the same seasonal conditions.

The historic town trail is another way to explore Bourgneuf-en-Retz on foot: this very easy, 1.5-kilometer urban loop interprets the local heritage and starts and ends on Rue de la Taillée. It is accessible year-round, though you should still check local trail conditions before visiting. Unlike the trail around the third pond, its accessibility is not dependent on water from winter rainfall draining away.

Museum and Maritime Local History

The Musée du Pays de Retz is located in Bourgneuf-en-Retz, in the municipality of Villeneuve-en-Retz, and is recognized as a Musée de France. Across 1,300 m², it presents art and folk traditions, history, and the cultural and natural heritage of the area—from prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century. The museum thus combines a broad historical perspective with a range of regional heritage themes.

The museum experience also includes practical, hands-on activities: visitors can handle terracotta objects and wooden tools, and try on historical replicas of helmets, hats, swords and sabers. An archaeological reconstruction of a salt furnace from the Gallic period complements the exhibition. Together with the explanation of the salt-marsh basins, salt can thus be experienced both as a production process and through an archaeological reconstruction.

Another facet of local history is reflected in the neo-Gothic L'Eglise Notre Dame du Bon Port de Bourgneuf. It was built between the 19th and 20th centuries, and its history is connected to the sea. Alongside the exhibitions at the Musée du Pays de Retz, the church therefore offers its own maritime perspective on the town’s cultural history.
