A stay in La Chapelle-Saint-Sauveur can be explored through three distinct themes: sacred art in the Église de la Transfiguration, a circular route through the bocage landscape, and the paths in the park around the Château de la Jaillière. The Étang du Perchage lies in the heart of the village and also features on the Circuit du Perchage. Visitors who want to combine culture with time outdoors can treat these as separate highlights and plan their stay accordingly.

Church and wood carvings

The Église de la Transfiguration was built around 1870. Inside are polychrome wooden figures of adoring angels dating from 1817, created by the sculptor Henri Hamilton Barrême. Polychrome means decorated in multiple colors; in the case of the angels, material, color, subject and a precise date all come together. The date 1817 predates the church’s construction around 1870, making the figures’ chronology a point of interest in its own right. The church also houses a polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century, attributed to Barrême. In terms of attribution, the two works differ in ways that matter to art enthusiasts: the angels are dated to a specific year and named as Barrême’s work; the statue of Mary is assigned to a century and attributed to Barrême. This brings together a precise date and a more cautiously worded artist attribution.

Circuit du Perchage and the pond

For outdoor activity, the 11.4-kilometer Circuit du Perchage offers a clearly defined route. It passes through bocage countryside, along small country lanes and through wooded avenues. The distance provides a clear framework for planning, while the different paths and avenues also shape the landscape along the route. The car park at the Étang du Perchage is the starting point. The pond is also designated as a picnic stop along the route and lies in the heart of the village. It therefore serves two different purposes: it is a central village landmark and a named stop on the circular route. Check the local signs before setting off. Fishing at the Étang is possible seasonally and requires a fishing permit.

Park paths as a different option

The Parc de la Jaillière offers another way to spend time outdoors. The park around the Château de la Jaillière covers 40 hectares and can be explored via winding paths. The practical difference from the Circuit du Perchage is that the latter has a stated circular route length of 11.4 kilometers, while the Parc de la Jaillière is defined by its size and winding paths. You can choose according to whether you would rather follow a route with a specific distance or make a park with winding paths your destination.
