Pointe Saint-Gildas brings together several ways to explore Préfailles during a stay: a circular trail with a stated duration, views across two coastal areas, a cycling route and the Musée du sémaphore. There is also Grande Plage below Chapelle Notre-Dame and an art trail leading to the town centre. This makes it possible to discover the coast and culture through specific places.
Coastal trails with different features
The customs officers’ coastal path in Préfailles is classified as the GR8 long-distance hiking trail and is reserved exclusively for pedestrians. For cycling, the departmental Vélocéan route is another option: it starts at Pointe Saint-Gildas. This gives you a choice between a long-distance trail expressly reserved for pedestrians and a cycling route starting at the point.
The circular trail around Pointe Saint-Gildas is 7.1 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This gives you both the distance and approximate duration for the route. By comparison, the customs officers’ coastal path is designated as a long-distance hiking trail and footpath, so the two routes can be compared by activity and time available.
Pointe Saint-Gildas: coastal views and natural environment
From Pointe Saint-Gildas, the panoramic view stretches from the Loire estuary to Bourgneuf Bay. Designated the Pointe Saint-Gildas Regional Nature Reserve in 2014, the area helps preserve this natural environment. The protected area is documented as having 41 natural habitats, 46 percent of which are considered habitats of Community interest.
Grande Plage is also part of the coastal landscape here: it is Préfailles’ largest beach and lies below Chapelle Notre-Dame. Together with the view from the point, it offers several specific coastal attractions that may be relevant when planning a stay in Préfailles.
Chapel and art trail
Chapelle Notre-Dame de Préfailles was completed in 1852 and enlarged with two side chapels between 1890 and 1900. It is still used for religious services. In summer, it hosts well-known classical music concerts; the programme may vary from one concert to another. You can also discover the chapel via the heritage interpretation trail “L'histoire de Préfailles”.
The Circuit des Peintres passes 23 works of art created between 1870 and 2012. Its route connects Pointe Saint-Gildas with the town centre via Port-aux-Goths. The trail offers a distinct cultural way to explore Préfailles, while the chapel—with its architectural history and summer concerts—provides another point of interest.
The Musée du sémaphore at Pointe Saint-Gildas
Since 2004, the Sémaphore de la Pointe Saint-Gildas has been a museum exhibition space about signal stations, lighthouses and the lives of their keepers. The museum invites visitors to learn how a signal station works, how maritime communications have evolved and why coastal surveillance matters. The permanent exhibition also covers the lives of lighthouse keepers and major shipwrecks in the Loire estuary.
The second floor offers panoramic views over Bourgneuf Bay and the Loire estuary. The visitor route also includes a room devoted entirely to children. The semaphore can be reached via the coastal path; check trail conditions locally.
