Saint-Félix-Lauragais appeals to travellers with a range of interests: local history and architecture, a market with a varied selection, and recurring festivals each offer something different. When choosing your dates, consider both a particular day of the week and the dates of events. The Château, Collegiate Church and the village’s development form a cultural and historical focus; the market and festival calendar offer further practical points to help you plan.

Château, Village History and Architecture

The Château de Saint-Félix-Lauragais was the starting point for the settlement of the village on a promontory overlooking the plain. In the 14th century, a brother of Pope John XXII transformed the Château into a country palace. The history of the place thus encompasses both the settlement’s beginnings and the Château’s later use as a country residence.

The Collegiate Church of Saint-Félix in Saint-Félix-Lauragais was built in the first half of the 14th century and assigned to the chapter of canons founded by Pope John XXII in 1318. The church is built in the Southern Gothic style; its bell tower is 42 metres high and has a porch. The Collegiate Church thus brings together its construction date, ecclesiastical context and specific architectural features. The market hall was listed by decree on 9 November 1926. The Rigole de la Plaine is also designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Weekly Market and Festivals

The Marché de Plein Vent takes place on Friday mornings in the central square of Saint-Félix-Lauragais. Its selection includes fruit and vegetables, meat and cured meats, wines, beers, spirits and natural fruit juices. There are also Réunionese and Japanese specialities. The selection may change; check the current market schedule before your visit.

The Fête historique de la Cocagne takes place in Saint-Félix-Lauragais over the Easter weekend. Its parades feature more than 400 costumed participants. If you are planning your trip around this festival, check the exact programme before your visit, as individual events may vary.

Another occasion is the annual village festival around 21 June. It lasts three days and includes a fair, food trucks, concerts, a mobile disco and a communal meal prepared by the festival committee. The programme may also vary from year to year. The two festivals have different emphases: the Fête historique centres on its parades, while the village festival combines a fair, music and a communal meal. This can help you choose the dates that best suit your interests.
