In Peyrissas, distinctive church architecture and historical traditions meet practical opportunities for hiking and cycling. One particularly striking landmark is the Croix du Hilaynat: the twisted cross has an arrow-shaped opening and stands on the Sentier de Mayole. This makes it possible to include local history and a notable structure in your travel plans as you explore the route.

Hiking and a Cycling Tour

The Sentier de Mayole is listed as an easy 23-kilometre hike taking six hours. The distance, difficulty rating and duration together provide a guide for choosing your route. The Croix du Hilaynat is a specific point along this trail.

Walks held during village festivals also show why it is important to check which year's programme you are planning around. The programme for the 2026 Fête du village included a 12-kilometre hike on Sunday. At the 2022 village festival, a walk covered 12.5 kilometres through Peyrissas and Benque, following the Nère and passing maize fields. This route also included difficult sections with steps and ropes. Walks at later village festivals may differ from the one in 2022.

Another option on two wheels is the Tour du Comminges à Vélo, a cycling tour that passes through Peyrissas, among other places. Together with the listed hike, it offers a clear choice between a long walk and a cycling tour. The village-festival walks are separate, dated events.

Church Architecture and History

The church of Saint-Roch has a short nave and a transept with two semicircular chapels. It also has a large apse with two apsidioles and a Gothic south portal.

The Romanesque section and two capitals in the left apse chapel of a church in Peyrissas have been listed as protected elements since 8 September 1928. The church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption includes building elements from the 10th, 16th and 19th centuries. It is a remnant of a former monastery founded around the 10th century by the Abbey of Lézat in Ariège. The former monastery became a priory at the end of the 12th century.

The Croix du Hilaynat also brings a historical tradition into the landscape: according to the story, the cross was erected to commemorate an 11th-century battle. Two lords are said to have fought over control of the Abbey of Peyrissas. As a local tradition, the story preserves its uncertain historical status; the cross itself remains a distinctive landmark on the Sentier de Mayole.
