Fondamente can be explored through several specific discoveries: the studio work in a former sawmill, landscape views, and routes on foot or by mountain bike. For a short break, it helps to choose a focus: would you like to set aside time for printmaking and artists’ books, or are you mainly interested in trails, woodland and views? The following places and activities offer different starting points.

Studio Art in a Former Sawmill

Les Ateliers de la Scierie are located in Fondamente in a former sawmill built in 1903 and powered by water. The building’s former purpose and its power source provide a specific technical context; at the same time, the studios focus on art and design. Since 2013, courses and workshops in printmaking and artists’ books have been held regularly, including pop-up and roll-up books. The program thus brings together printmaking and book forms that can open out or move. Les Ateliers de la Scierie also offer insights into the studio and the artistic work of Sophie Vigneau. A visit can therefore bring together two interests: the history of a building once used for industrial purposes and the forms of handcrafted book art.

Views and Varied Landscapes

Another way to explore the area is through its views and landscapes. The Croix de Serre Pountchut offers a panorama over the Sorgues Valley and the Guilhaumard Plateau. From the same viewpoint, a valley and a plateau come into view—two distinct landscape forms that make this an outing centered on scenery. The Croix de Serre Pountchut can therefore be considered a landscape destination in its own right, alongside the circuits described below.

Remnants of a chestnut grove shape the landscape along the Circuit de Canabols. The Circuit de la Serre Pountchut passes through forests and woodland, over red-colored soils, and by remnants of a chestnut grove. The route also offers a view of the Château de Montpaon on its rocky spur. The two circuits can therefore be distinguished by their described features: Canabols is especially notable for the remains of the chestnut grove; the Serre Pountchut loop also features woodland, red soils, and views of the château.

Mountain Biking and Guided Tours

VTT N°43 – Les Bois de Moulès is a 10.31-kilometer mountain bike loop in Fondamente. Designed with families in mind, the loop runs through the riverbank areas and woodlands of the Sorgues Valley. If you would prefer a guided outing, Sud Aveyron Sport Nature offers guided mountain biking, hiking, or cycling trips ranging from half a day to multi-day stays. Jordan Gaudy is a trained mountain biking, cycling, and hiking guide. Unlike the VTT loop, which has a specified distance, these activities are best compared by type of activity and duration. Check specific dates and what each offer includes in advance.
