Rivière-Sur-Tarn offers travelers several clearly distinct experiences: Château de Peyrelade as a medieval fortress, the production and tasting of Bleu des Causses AOP, and water sports in the Gorges du Tarn. There are also the cave villages of Entre-Deux-Monts, with their distinctive natural ventilation and a historic tradition. For planning purposes, these themes can be organized by interest: cultural history, cheese and aging, or an activity on the water.

Cheese production and tasting

The Cave de Peyrelade boutique in Rivière-Sur-Tarn gives visitors insight into the production process as well as the chance to taste Bleu des Causses AOP. The cheese ages for a total of 15 weeks, including two weeks in natural caves. Aging in caves is therefore part of the overall aging period. If you would like not only to taste a product but also learn more about how it is made, you can do both here in one place.

The boutique is open year-round. As opening hours may change, check that it is open before your visit. The tasting and insight into the production process offer different points of focus: you can get to know the cheese while also putting the information about its aging period into context.

Château de Peyrelade: fortress and tour

Château de Peyrelade is a medieval fortress built between the 12th and 16th centuries. This period spans several centuries and provides a broad timeframe for its construction history. During a visit, you can learn about the site's history and unusual architecture, as well as the restoration and excavation work carried out for more than 30 years.

A scenographically designed tour explores these themes through models, information panels and a video. Alongside the architecture, the site's history and the work carried out there are also at the center. The long construction period and the work undertaken over several decades offer different perspectives on the fortress over time: its origins and the efforts to restore and excavate it.

Water sports in the Gorges du Tarn

The Canoë Gorges du Tarn rental base is located at the entrance to the Gorges du Tarn. It offers canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in the Gorges. The available downstream routes are 10, 15 or 20 kilometers long. In order of length, the 10-kilometer route is the shortest, the 20-kilometer route the longest, and the 15-kilometer route falls in between. This lets you compare the route options using a specific feature, while the three water sports offer different ways to enjoy the water.

Route availability may vary by season. Before planning, check which option is offered for your dates. This lets you take your preferred route length into account without assuming a particular duration or level of difficulty.

Entre-Deux-Monts: cave dwellings and a former tradition

In the cave villages of Entre-Deux-Monts, limestone and natural ventilation are connected in a distinctive way. The villages are set in rugged limestone, and underground air currents at a constant temperature provide ventilation. These air currents are called “Fleurines.” In addition to this architectural and natural feature, the cave village also had a former social role: it served as a gathering place for Sunday afternoon snacks. The Fleurines and the historic use show two different sides of the place.

Another way to discover Entre-Deux-Monts is via the hiking trail to the Piédestal de Fontaneilles: the signposted route leads to the wine cellars of Entre-Deux-Monts. This specific route description adds a named hiking trail and its destination to the distinctive features of the cave villages. No information about the route's length or walking time is provided here.
