Espalion lies on both banks of the Lot, in the heart of the Lot Valley. Its defining features include bridges and old tanneries, Romanesque sculpture and buildings from later periods. There is also a visitor trail at Château de Calmont d’Olt, as well as canoeing and cycling activities. You can make culture the focus of your stay or combine it with a specific activity.

Bridges and the history of the old town

The Pont-Vieux dates from the early 13th century and has three pointed arches. The bridge has been listed as a Monument historique since 9 March 1888. A walk through the old town also highlights the old tanneries between the two bridges. The clearly defined form of the medieval bridge thus meets a reminder of the tanneries’ former craft. If you prefer to trace the town’s history through its buildings rather than a chronological overview, this contrast offers a distinct focus.

Romanesque art and later building phases

The Romanesque heritage is especially vivid at the church of Perse. It was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Along with the portal at Conques, its portal is one of only two surviving examples of large-scale Romanesque sculptural decoration in the Rouergue. This comparison places the portal in a specific art-historical context and draws attention not only to its construction date but also to its surviving sculptural decoration. The Chapelle de Perse has been listed as a Monument historique since its inclusion on the list in 1862.

The Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs represents a different architectural period: it was built in the Baroque style in 1700, is located in the historic centre of Espalion and lies on a route to Santiago de Compostela. In a thematic comparison with the church of Perse, the focus here is on a later building phase. The Musée Joseph Vaylet is also housed in a historic religious building: the former 15th- and 16th-century church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The former church thus also serves as the setting for the museum.

A trail and outdoor activities

Château de Calmont d’Olt offers a visitor trail exploring the architecture and history of the site. This approach differs from that of the buildings noted for their historical dates or sculptural decoration: here, the trail takes visitors specifically through the château’s architecture and history. The site therefore offers a distinct cultural focus alongside the old-town features and religious architecture.

Beyond architectural history, there are two clearly defined activity options. Canoe trips run by ELSA Base Canoë-kayak Espalion pass through a protected area classified as a Natura 2000 site. This gives the natural setting of the trip its own importance alongside the buildings. The Vallée du Lot à vélo (V86) route includes a section of about 28 kilometres and follows the GR 65 between Espalion and Saint-Côme. While the canoe trip connects with a protected area, the cycling route provides an approximate distance and two named points for orientation. When choosing a theme for your trip, you can therefore distinguish between the natural setting of the canoe trip and the cycling section of about 28 kilometres.
