The GR62 passes right through the medieval heart of Saint-Beauzély. The village lies on the southern slope of the Monts du Lévézou in the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park—a destination where historic buildings, stone craftsmanship and outdoor activities come together.

Landscape and Trails Around Saint-Beauzély

The landscape around Saint-Beauzély stretches from the Lévézou mountains to the Causse Rouge. Its traditional features also include dry-stone cazelles. For outdoor activities, Saint-Beauzély offers opportunities for walking, hiking, trail running, fishing, hunting, mushroom picking, mountain biking and cycling. The GR62 passes through the medieval heart of the village; for a shorter walk, there is also the Saint-Beauzély orienteering course. This family-friendly circular route goes through the village and is designed as a fun discovery trail lasting about 45 minutes.

Local History and Stone Craftsmanship

Sandstone houses define the medieval heart of the village. Preserved traces of its past include the Porte de la Madeleine and the Passage du Voultre. The château is also closely linked to the history of the village: it is thought to date from the 12th century and to have been the starting point for the village’s development. Today it houses the Musée de la Mémoire de la Vie Rurale and has been listed as a historic monument since 1998.

The museum explores traditional activities, crafts and rural life in the Muse valley. Its collection includes more than 5,000 objects relating to agriculture, rural life and stone craftsmanship. Particular attention is given to the historic extraction of sandstone and its working in Saint-Beauzély. The château thus brings together local history and insights into the work that shaped the area’s building traditions.

Religious Buildings and Historic Sites

The Prieuré de Comberoumal was a priory of the Order of Grandmont, founded toward the end of the 12th century. The complex includes a cloister, a chapter house, a common room and a dormitory. The vaulted chapter house and a three-tiered arched opening offer further insights into its architecture. The priory can be visited independently; visiting arrangements may vary. A concert is held there every August as part of the Festival des Musiques Sacrées de Sylvanès. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific event dates.

The Église Saint-Jacques de Salsac is a pre-Romanesque and Romanesque religious building dating from the 10th and 12th centuries. It was built of sandstone and roofed with slate slabs. The Sanctuaires antiques des Basiols form a Gallo-Roman archaeological site in Saint-Beauzély. The Sanctuaire des Basiols has been listed as a historic monument since April 14, 1992.

Discover Fruit Production and Distillation

At La Muse du Verger, the experience takes you from fruit production through the making of spirits to a tasting in a vaulted cellar. There is also a 1.5-hour guided tour about distillation in a vaulted cellar in the medieval heart of the village. The two stated durations provide a useful guide for planning your day: the fun village loop takes about 45 minutes, while the guided tour lasts an hour and a half. This lets you choose between a shorter walk and a more in-depth themed visit.
