Roman thermal history, an Art Deco hall and trails leading to a historic industrial site or a protected pond: Bains-Les-Bains offers different ways to shape your stay. Its buildings tell the story of several centuries of local history; two walking loops and a cycling route offer another way to explore the surrounding area.

Thermal History and Architecture

The Romans probably used the thermal springs as early as the 1st century AD. They built the first pools at the site of today’s Bain Romain. Much later, in 1845, the Bain Romain was built there on the site of the former Bain Vieux. The building was designed by architect Louis Gahon. Here, an early use documented with some uncertainty can be distinguished from a specific construction date in the 19th century.

La Potinière offers a different architectural accent: the event hall was built in the Art Deco style in 1937. Together with the Bain Romain, it shows how varied the town’s architectural history is. Visitors interested in architecture will find more than a single historical period here.

Industrial History and Pilgrimage

In the 18th century, the Manufacture Royale de Bains was the kingdom’s leading tinplate factory. It is one of the best-preserved industrial sites in France. Its history is also a subject to explore along the way: the Circuit La Manufacture Royale follows the Vosges Canal and makes a detour to the grounds of the Manufacture Royale, founded in 1733. The site is privately owned.

Another historic site is the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Brosse. The present-day neo-Gothic chapel was completed in 1861 and remains an important pilgrimage site. During the season, it is regularly open in the afternoons. If you plan to visit, check the opening times in advance, as it is open seasonally.

Walking Trails and Planning Your Time

The marked Circuit La Manufacture Royale is a 10.1-kilometre circular walking trail. In addition to the section along the Vosges Canal, its route includes a detour to the privately owned grounds of the Manufacture Royale. Check the trail conditions and markings before setting out. This will help you assess the walk based on its length and historical focus, without mistaking the detour for guaranteed access to the site.

The Circuit de l’Étang Lallemand is an easy 9.4-kilometre circular walk, with a stated duration of three hours. It leads to the protected site of Étang Lallemand and its fish farm. The two routes therefore differ in more than length: the Circuit La Manufacture follows the canal and traces industrial history, while the Circuit de l’Étang leads to the protected pond and fish farm. The stated difficulty and duration can help you plan your day around the Étang route.

Explore by Bike

The B.5 cycling route starts at Place du Marché in Bains-les-Bains. Check the route and local markings before setting off. The Office de Tourisme de La Vôge-les-Bains in Bains-les-Bains rents out bicycles for different routes, including electric-assist bikes. Rental availability may vary by season.

These different highlights give your stay a clear direction.
