Discover Monthureux-Sur-Saône from two very different angles: paths through the forests and the Vallon du Préfonrupt lead into the countryside, while Eglise Saint-Michel and Maison du Patrimoine Local open a window onto the area’s history and rural heritage. Specific details can help with planning: an approximately one-hour circular trail contrasts with a hike listed as taking nine hours. There are also named waypoints and seasonal visiting conditions. This lets you weigh nature, local history and the time available against one another.

Hiking and scenery in the Vallon du Préfonrupt

The forests of Monthureux-Sur-Saône offer numerous hiking and mountain biking trails. The circular educational trail in the Vallon du Préfonrupt is a useful point of reference: it starts at the cemetery car park, is marked ENS 88 and takes about an hour. This time estimate is useful when deciding how to fit a manageable circular walk around other interests in the town.

The Vallon du Préfonrupt and its neighbouring wetlands are home to the brook lamprey Lamproie de planer, the bullhead Chabot, the fire salamander and the yellow-bellied toad. Biodiversity offers its own perspective on the valley, alongside its paths and landscape features. A constructed path above the valley offers views of sandstone outcrops, an old quarry and the dense vegetation of the wooded valley.

The Sentier du Père Maire (No. 15) starts in Monthureux-Sur-Saône on Allée des Moines, near Place de la République. Along the way are Fontaine du Buis, Roche du Serpent and a railway tunnel designated as a Natura 2000 site and home to colonies of bats. The route also includes a former monastery, Pont des Prussiens, Roche du Père Maire and the Vallon du Préfonrupt. Its description can therefore be understood through its named natural and cultural landmarks, without adding a walking time.

Les Balcons de la Saône (Nos. 2 and 3) also start on Allée des Moines. These routes are graded as easy, and the stated duration is nine hours. Compared with the approximately one-hour circular trail in the Vallon, this is a clear difference in the time required. The difficulty rating and duration answer two different questions: how the hike is graded and how much time is allocated to it.

Local history and heritage

Monthureux-Sur-Saône is a former fortified settlement built in a bend of the Saône. The Parcours entre Saône et Mouzon offers an opportunity to discover the town’s thousand-year history. This historical perspective complements the trail descriptions with a look at how the town developed.

Eglise Saint-Michel is a former priory church founded from 1090 by Benedictines under the authority of Luxeuil. The church contains a remarkable polychrome wooden Entombment in the Rhenish style, dating from the late 15th century. The church can be visited individually free of charge; guided tours are available on request. Check visiting arrangements before travelling.

Maison du Patrimoine Local is located in the former rectory. Its collection of household and agricultural objects recalls rural life in the past, offering a different way to explore local history than the church and visitor trail. The Maison is open in July and August; check the current dates before visiting.
