Five town or short hiking trails start at Place de l’Esplanade in Scy-Chazelles; the square also offers a remarkable viewpoint over the city of Metz and the Moselle Valley. This makes the trailhead and viewpoint two concrete starting points for planning your trip in the same place. Other highlights include the Maison de Robert Schuman, churches with different historical connections, gardens and traces of the wine-growing tradition. You can focus on cultural history, scenery or the region’s wine identity.

Cultural history at the Maison de Robert Schuman

The Maison de Robert Schuman is a cultural site administered by the Moselle Department, which has managed it since 2000. It has been open to the public year-round as a memorial site since May 9, 2000. The estate includes a residence, a large garden and a manor house dating from the late Middle Ages. The site also holds the “Maison des Illustres” designation. Its various features give this cultural destination both an architectural and a commemorative focus.

The museum area is fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, thanks to an elevator. The Maison offers recreational and educational workshops for children aged five to twelve. Its cultural program includes European Week in May and concerts. If a particular event is important for your travel dates, check the schedule in advance.

Two churches, different historical connections

The Église Saint-Rémi features both Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The Église Saint-Quentin was built in the 12th century by the fathers of Gorze Abbey; Robert Schuman is buried there. The churches thus have distinct historical significance: Saint-Rémi can be understood through its combination of two architectural styles, while Saint-Quentin has its own connection to local history through its date of construction and Schuman’s grave.

Views, gardens and nature

The Jardin des plantes de chez nous overlooks the Moselle Valley and showcases forgotten plants developed by some of the most prominent garden designers of the early 20th century. Here, valley views meet the history of horticulture. The Parc Ecologique et de la Biodiversité is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species; the park also has a small vegetable garden with perennial plants. The two green spaces have different focuses: the Jardin combines views with the history of plants, while the Parc brings together biodiversity and perennial crops.

Wine tradition and regional transport

Scy and Chazelles were wine-growing villages and have regained the AOC designation “Vins de Moselle.” The route connection is a separate feature: the Route des vins de Moselle passes through Scy-Chazelles, and its passage through the village was inaugurated there in 2014. Together, the regained designation and the dated route milestone show two different aspects of the local wine identity.

The Metz'O 1 river shuttle connects the city center of Metz with Scy-Chazelles and Moulins-lès-Metz. Bicycles and scooters are allowed on board. As operating periods may change seasonally, check the current timetable before your trip.
