La Maxe can be explored through three distinct themes: routes along the Moselle, a bird refuge and an archaeological site with a long history of settlement. When planning your visit, the key is deciding which aspect interests you. You can assess the opportunities for getting active by looking at the named walking and cycling routes; the bird refuge is linked to seasonal bird migration, while the site east of the village traces a history from prehistory to the Early Middle Ages. This offers different ways to explore side by side: follow the routes, observe nature and discover cultural history.

Riverside routes and cycle paths

The Sentier n°9 – Les grandes serres is rated easy for walking and cycling. It runs along the banks of the Moselle, shaded by majestic willows. The easy rating applies to both activities; the route along the shaded riverbanks provides an additional point of reference in the landscape. If you want to get around on foot or by bike, you can consider both the route’s difficulty and the riverside scenery when making your choice.

The Véloroute V50 in La Maxe is a shared route for pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters. The V50 is intended for three user groups, while the Sentier is rated easy for walking and cycling. The routes therefore offer different points of reference: one detail concerns shared use, while the other is a difficulty rating for two ways of getting around.

In Lorraine, the Voie Bleue follows the Moselle valley and uses towpaths, among other routes. It is 260 kilometres long in Lorraine, crosses national borders and continues into Germany and other French regions. The Moselle valley, towpaths and cross-border continuation describe its route, the type of path it uses and its reach. In Lorraine, the Véloroute connects Apach on the Luxembourg border with Lyon and is 700 kilometres long. While the Voie Bleue can be described in terms of the Moselle valley and towpaths, the Véloroute is defined by its Apach–Lyon connection and overall length.

Bird refuge by the lagoon

The La Maxe bird refuge is on the left bank of the lagoon. The body of water there covers 60 hectares and serves as a resting place for birds migrating through the region each autumn and spring. Observation points make it possible to watch this ecosystem. Here, the focus is on the body of water, its location and seasonal bird migration. This adds a distinct nature theme to the routes: rather than route difficulty or course, the key aspects are the water’s role as a resting place and the opportunity to observe the ecosystem.

Archaeological site and a long history of settlement

The La Maxe archaeological site lies just east of the village. It covers about 6 hectares and is a microrelief landform. This description draws attention to the shape of the terrain, while the history of settlement spans a broad period: successive phases of human settlement range from the Early Neolithic, around 5000 BC, to the Early Middle Ages. The site also includes a major rural settlement from the Gallo-Roman period. A specific settlement form and several successive periods therefore come together in one place. For choosing what interests you, the site offers both a geographical connection to the village and a chronology that extends well beyond the Gallo-Roman period.

You can weigh the themes according to the questions that matter to you: Which route feature is important to you—the easy rating of the Sentier or the shared Véloroute V50? When it comes to regional cycling, are you more interested in the route through the Moselle valley or the connection between Apach and Lyon? Or would you rather focus on nature and history, with seasonal bird migration by the water and the settlement phases at the archaeological site? These specific differences can help you choose the aspects of La Maxe that best suit your stay.
