Rosbruck is a French border village on the edge of the vast Warndt Forest. Its historical traces range from a medieval chapel to memorial sites from different eras; the Itinéraire des Berges de la Rosselle also passes through the village. History and outdoor pursuits are therefore two distinct themes that you can use to plan your trip.
Rosbruck is five kilometres from Forbach railway station. If you are considering travelling by train, check the connections before setting out.
History and memorial sites
The ancient Roman road from Metz to Worms passed through Rosbruck and crossed the Rosselle here. Another early trace is the Saint-Hubert Chapel: it was built in the Middle Ages by the lords of Varsberg and is documented from the 14th century. The chapel was destroyed in 1940 and no longer survives. The history of an ancient route and that of a medieval building thus stand side by side.
The Peace Stele was erected on 4 July 1998 along the RD 603, on the border between Rosbruck and Naßweiler. The Vosges sandstone monolith is six metres high and weighs 7.5 tonnes. A dove is cut out of the stele; above it stand two children representing the youth of France and Germany. The monument’s location and design give it an explicitly cross-border significance.
The war memorial also has its own chronology. The newer memorial was erected in 1988 between the town hall and the church, and moved in 2020 to a location near the large cedar between the two buildings. A plaque bearing the inscription “Aux enfants de Rosbruck morts pour la Paix” was installed there. The composition of four statues explores the brutality of war and the despair of people who have lost everything.
The Uhlan grave at Hochfels commemorates six Uhlans who were killed on 7 August 1870 during the Battle of Rosbruck. The grave was restored in June 2017. In October of the same year, a new cross matching the original design and a marble plaque were added. These details place the grave in the history of the battle while also recording the later additions.
The Itinéraire des Berges de la Rosselle
The Itinéraire des Berges de la Rosselle passes through Rosbruck. The route is considered easy and suitable for families, and its surface is easy to travel on. Along the way, segregated sections alternate with quiet, shared-use stretches. This mix is a useful distinction when choosing between different ways of getting around. The surface and conditions along the route may change, so check them before planning to use it.
The route is suitable for road cycling, cycling on a trekking or mountain bike, inline skating, running and walking. You can choose according to whether you want to travel on wheels, on skates or on foot. The route thus offers a specific outdoor activity option alongside Rosbruck’s historical attractions, without either needing to be the main focus.
For planning purposes, you can consider the information about the railway station separately from the village’s different attractions: Forbach railway station provides a reference point for your journey, while the memorial sites and the route along the Rosselle appeal to different interests. This can help you decide whether history, outdoor pursuits or both should be the focus when looking for accommodation and planning your stay.
