Marieulles lies between the ridges on the right bank of the Moselle and the Seille plain. Churches dating from different centuries, a history of winegrowing and several trails give your trip different focuses: you can explore the history of the village, plan a specific walking route or discover wine and regional products.

Church Architecture and History in Marieulles and Vezon

The history of Marieulles dates back at least to 50 BC. In 691, the place is recorded under the name « Mariolas »; Marieulles was part of « l’Isle » between the Moselle and the Seille. The church of Saint Martin is an important point of reference in the village’s history. Its construction phases span the 13th to the 18th centuries. The choir contains a 15th-century oculus, a circular opening that serves as an architectural detail.

The fortified bell tower also makes the church noteworthy: the massive tower has three storeys and loopholes, and was part of the ensemble of fortified churches in the Pays Messin. In Vezon stands the chapel of Saint-Léonard. It was built in 1538 by the monks of Saint-Clément and dedicated to the saint. The sites offer different historical perspectives: Saint Martin brings together several construction phases and the fortified tower, while the chapel is associated with a specific construction date.

Wine Country and Regional Produce

Winegrowing and related trades were the main occupation of the people of Marieulles until the beginning of the 20th century. The vineyards of Domaine Enivrance are in Vezon, on a southeast-facing slope above the Seille Valley. Winegrowing and the landscape are therefore closely tied to the character of the village, while the history of work in the vineyards offers a longer view through time.

Another way to discover the wine region is the 46-kilometre « Route des Vins du Pays Messin ». It can be explored by bicycle, car or on foot. The route passes through the winegrowing area on the outskirts of Metz and connects 20 villages between Marieulles-Vezon in the south and Marange-Silvange in the north. Marieulles-Vezon is the southern reference point of the route described here.

At its wine cellar, Domaine Oury Schreiber sells its certified organic products directly. The « Route des Vins de Moselle » is also associated with the commune of Marieulles-Vezon; the Oury-Schreiber and Jaspard wine estates are mentioned in this context. The « Balade apéro dans les vignes » includes a guided tour of the vineyards lasting about an hour and a half. It offers an insight into work in the cellar as well as a tasting of the estate’s wines accompanied by a selection of local products. Headlamps are used in winter. The event is listed for the first Saturday of each month; check dates and booking details in advance.

Planning Walks and Tours

The nature walk « Promenade des orchidées » is in the commune of Marieulles-Vezon and starts at Place de la Mairie in Marieulles, at an elevation of 240 metres. The route is 7.50 kilometres long, has 165 metres of elevation gain and takes a stated 2 hours and 15 minutes. These details can help you fit the walk into your day; allow extra time for breaks and your own pace. Vezon is also on the circular route of the fortified churches of the Pays Messin. You can therefore choose between a walk with specific distance and elevation figures and a route focused on church architecture. Check the latest route information before setting out.

The Distillerie de Mélanie in Marieulles-Vezon is a fruit producer specialising in Lorraine mirabelle plum brandy. It offers tours of the distillery followed by tastings of its products. A visit lasts one hour, is available by prior appointment only and is offered in French only. Confirm the appointment and language before making plans. For travellers particularly interested in regional heritage, the experience combines a distillery visit with a tasting; make sure the required advance booking and French-language tour fit your plans.

Getting There and Practical Information

Marieulles can be reached via the A31 motorway and exit 29 near Fey. Check road conditions before setting out. Vezon’s history also includes a former pilgrimage practice: women from the surrounding area once made pilgrimages to the iron-rich spring at the entrance to the village and drank from it. The water from the Pschotte is no longer drinkable; check current local guidance before drinking or collecting it.
