Fontpédrouse can be explored through three clearly distinct themes: thermal waters, mountain hikes, and traces of religious and medieval history. When planning, it helps to start by asking which of these themes you would like to focus on most. The Bains thermaux de Saint-Thomas are the focal point for the thermal theme; for hiking, there are two routes of different lengths to choose from. Prats-Balaguer has two distinct points of interest: the circular Autour du Cucurucull trail starts and ends there, and the Romanesque church is also located there.

Thermal waters at the Bains de Saint-Thomas

The Bains thermaux de Saint-Thomas are set in a stone amphitheatre at an altitude of 1,150 m in the Fontpédrouse valley. A natural sulphur spring emerges here at 58°C; the baths also have three outdoor pools with thermal water. Their altitude and the stone amphitheatre provide a scenic setting for the baths. The spring and pools represent different aspects of the thermal offering: the natural spring and its temperature, and the three outdoor pools filled with thermal water.

Hiking trails with different levels of difficulty

Autour du Cucurucull is a difficult 8.6 km mountain loop with 740 m of ascent. The starting point and finish are in the hamlet of Prats-Balaguer in Fontpédrouse. The trail follows the Cami Ramader, a transhumance route, and offers views of the peaks of the Riberola valley. The wild Riberola valley itself lies between the Carança massif and Puigmal. This route combines a historical connection with a trail and views of the landscape; its level of difficulty can also be assessed by its distance, ascent and rating. For hikers who want to gauge the physical effort involved, the 740 m of ascent and the difficult rating are important details for planning.

The second route, named PR 102: THE HAMLETS OF FONTPEDROUSE, is a 6.1 km walking trail in Fontpédrouse. At 6.1 km, it is shorter than the 8.6 km loop. For Autour du Cucurucull, the difficult rating and 740 m of ascent are additional criteria to consider. The two trails can therefore be compared by length; the loop can also be assessed by its difficulty and ascent.

Romanesque church and medieval history

The Romanesque church “L’église de la Trinité et Sainte Marie” stands at an altitude of 1,300 m in the hamlet of Prats-Balaguer; it was built in the 11th century. The church houses a rare collection of canvases that is protected as a historic monument. It forms the decoration for Holy Week, known in Catalan as “Monument”. Thus, medieval architectural history and a special Holy Week tradition come together in this hamlet. Alongside the church’s age, this collection is a distinctive detail in understanding Fontpédrouse’s cultural heritage.

El Castell also offers a glimpse into medieval history. The structure guarded the passage to the hermitage of Núria via the Coll de les Nou Fonts. The original tower was also part of the signal-tower chain in Roussillon and Cerdagne. Two aspects stand side by side: its role at the entrance to the hermitage and the tower’s place in a regional signal chain. El Castell thus links a specific mountain pass with a broader historical context.
