Puyvalador can be explored on different scales while you’re out and about: the Sentier du lac with ten information panels, mountain bike loop No. 12 at 7 kilometres, and the four-day Grande Traversée G2. There is also a named crossing over the Galbe and the Romanesque church of Rieutort. For planning, it helps to consider local trail options, the multi-day route and the cultural landmarks as distinct highlights.

Information trail or mountain bike loop?

The Sentier du lac de Puyvalador has ten information panels. If you’d like to include information points when choosing a trail, this gives you a specific option to consider. Mountain bike loop No. 12, Le tour du lac de Puyvalador, is 7 kilometres long. These offer different ways to explore: the Sentier with its panels and the mountain bike loop with its stated distance. Both names include the lake, but they do not describe the same offering. So when choosing, you can first consider whether an information trail or a mountain bike loop better suits how you plan to spend your time outdoors.

The four-day Grande Traversée G2

The Grande Traversée G2 runs from Capcir to Cerdanya and connects Puyvalador with Martinet in Spain. The route covers 91 kilometres and 1,400 metres of elevation gain over four days. This gives it a different timescale from the mountain bike loop: No. 12 is a loop, while the G2 is a multi-day route between two named places. If you plan your trip by days rather than around a single loop, the G2 offers a clearly stated timeframe. As route conditions can change, check the latest conditions before planning your stages.

Bridge and Romanesque church

The Pont de les Molines, also called Pont du Galbe, carries the route across the Galbe between Rieutort and Espousouille. The second name refers to the river, while Pont de les Molines is another name for the same crossing. It may date back to the Middle Ages, but its dating is uncertain, and the bridge could have been built much later.

In the municipality of Puyvalador-Rieutort, the Romanesque church of Rieutort is one of the sights. This presents two distinct historical points of interest: the church is identified as Romanesque, while a medieval origin for the Pont de les Molines remains only a possibility. If you’re interested in buildings, you can distinguish between these details according to what they state: an architectural classification in one case, an uncertain date in the other. The bridge is also described by its route connection between Rieutort and Espousouille; the church belongs to the municipality of Puyvalador-Rieutort.

When looking for hotels in Puyvalador, you can first decide whether your stay will focus on individual local highlights or the four-day G2.
