Espira-De-L'agly offers several distinct reasons to stay: Romanesque heritage, a short circular route with viewpoints, as well as winegrowing and seasonal produce. When looking for a hotel, you can decide what matters most: the church and Pont Romain, the Tour de Montpins, or a visit to a wine estate. This lets you assess the destination according to your interests rather than focusing on just one attraction.

Heritage in the town centre

The historic centre is home to a monumental religious ensemble centred on the Romanesque Église Sainte-Marie. The church is protected as a historic monument and has two twin apses inside. The holy-water font in the church is another distinct historical feature: on 12 July 1886, it was listed as an immovable historic monument. This places the protected church building and a specifically dated object side by side as two points of cultural and historical interest.

The Pont Romain adds another historical layer: this 12th-century relic was built on ancient ruins. The structure thus brings together two historical references, while Sainte-Marie represents Romanesque religious architecture. A 2020 route description says that the Pont Romain can be reached from the road along the Agly towards Cases de Pène. Check local road conditions before visiting.

Circular route, winegrowing and seasonal produce

The Tour de Montpins starts in Espira-De-L'agly and offers a clearly defined option for enjoying the landscape: a very easy 3.8 km circular route. It passes through Mediterranean woodland and a fragrant, hilly pine forest; several viewpoints overlook the Roussillon plain. The route therefore offers a different focus from the buildings in the town centre, highlighting woodland, hills and views. How far you can see may depend on the vegetation and weather. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Winegrowing also shapes the area, which has at least 21 independent wine cellars. This number may change as cellars open and close. Domaine Mas Crémat is in Espira-De-L'agly, in the “Côtes du Roussillon Villages” appellation in the Agly Valley. Its vineyards are farmed organically and surround a hundred-year-old building on black schist terroir.

Domaine Piquemal offers a different insight into winegrowing: this family-run estate covers 48 hectares on the slopes of the Agly Valley. Wine tastings are offered in its own cellar; arrange your visit with the estate in advance. At Piquemal, the focus is on the family business, its acreage and tastings; at Mas Crémat, it is on the appellation, black schist terroir and organic farming.

Espira-De-L'agly also has a public pump track. It is intended for bicycles—including BMX and dirt bikes—as well as skateboards, roller skates and scooters. This is a specific option for travellers who would rather focus on wheeled sports than sightseeing or wine tasting. Check local conditions for the facility before visiting.

Les Jardins du Pilo adds fresh figs to the local produce, available from mid-August to the end of October; the period may vary depending on harvest conditions. Farm visits are by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. Products include fig jam, whole figs, orange figs, walnut figs, apricot jam and fig vinegar; availability may vary depending on production and the season. Fig season gives a stay a specific seasonal dimension, while the need to book ahead is important when planning a visit.
