Les Angles is a holiday resort and ski resort in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park. Options range from slopes and a bike park to forest paths, water sports and Romanesque architecture. For trip planning, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: the options differ considerably by activity and, in some cases, by season.

Ski Resort and Winter Activities

The Les Angles ski area lies at an altitude of 1,600 to 2,400 metres. It includes 55 kilometres of pistes and has 800 metres of vertical drop. The snow park is primarily geared towards freestyle. Seasonal conditions can vary; if skiing is the main purpose of your stay, check current conditions before travelling.

Les Angles therefore has a clear focus on winter sports, although not all activities are designed in the same way. The snow park caters to freestyle, while the kilometres of pistes describe the broader scope of the ski area. This can help you decide whether winter sports should define your stay or whether you would like to plan around a variety of interests.

Forest Paths and Hikes

The very easy hike through the ForĂŞt de la Matte is about six kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. The trail passes through a forest of Scots pines and regularly follows the shore of Lac de Matemale. The distance and approximate duration offer a concrete guide for planning your time; the scenery combines stretches of forest with the lakeshore.

Another way to explore the forest is the themed trail “À la découverte de l’antre des mystères”. It leads to a hidden wetland in the forest of Les Angles and features information panels. Those interested in the landscape will find a route with its own thematic focus, in addition to the hike through the Forêt de la Matte.

The Plateau de Bigorre is also the starting point for numerous hikes and is accessible to everyone. The Les Pèlerins gondola takes passengers from the village of Les Angles up to the plateau at an altitude of 2,100 metres. This provides additional hiking options alongside the longer hike by Lac de Matemale.

Bike Park and Lou Bac Mountain

The Angles Bike Park has nine downhill trails across five difficulty or experience levels. It also offers 500 metres of vertical drop and 30 kilometres of trails for all levels. A green beginner trail runs through the lower forest and features bridges and picnic areas. As trail numbers, measurements and layouts can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

Lou Bac Mountain offers a different experience: the monorail luge has a 2,000-metre descent, 430 metres of vertical drop and a top speed of 42 kilometres per hour. Its track winds through the forest, with descents reaching a gradient of up to 70 per cent. Lou Bac Mountain is accessible via the Les Pèlerins gondola. The bike park and luge therefore differ both in the activity they offer and in the route features described.

Village History and Romanesque Architecture

Romanesque stonework can be seen at Église Saint-Michel. Features that have been preserved include the apse, a Lombard-style arcaded frieze, dentil friezes and the façade. Anyone interested in architectural history can take a closer look at the church’s Romanesque character through these individual details.

The Porte-Tour des Angles is the most important surviving remnant of the medieval castle from which the present-day village developed. Together, the church and the gate tower illustrate two different aspects of Les Angles’ history: the Romanesque architecture of Église Saint-Michel and the connection between today’s village and its medieval castle.

Water Sports and When to Visit

The Club Nautique L’Ourson runs weekly sailing courses for Optimist dinghies, catamarans and windsurfing. Seasonal activities also include pedal boating, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, and sailing in 420- and Caravelle-class dinghies. As schedules can change and activities are seasonal, check the latest course dates before travelling.

If several of these interests appeal to you, when looking for hotels in Les Angles you can weigh up which ones are essential for your travel dates and which are more of an added bonus.
