A two-hour circular hike with views across the Tarnon Valley and an international film festival give Vebron two distinct reasons to visit. The area also offers historic buildings and more trails through the Cévennes landscape. For planning, the differences are specific: some hikes take two hours, while others last three and a half hours and also state the elevation gain and loss.

Landscape and trails around Vebron

Vebron lies south of Florac, between the Gorges du Tarn and the Gorges de Jonte and between Mont-Aigoual and Mont-Lozère. The commune extends west across the Causse Méjean plateau and east into the Cévennes; its main villages are in the Tarnon Valley. These details describe the commune’s broad geographical setting, while the individual trails each reveal their own landscapes.

Les corniches de l’Hospitalet is an easy 4.3-kilometre circular hike, listed as taking two hours. It passes through Vebron and offers remarkable views across the Tarnon Valley and the Causse Méjean. The route runs through the core area of the Cévennes National Park. Check trail conditions before setting out and familiarise yourself with the park rules in force.

A longer hiking option is the Broussous circular route: it takes three and a half hours and has 330 metres of ascent and descent. The hike starts in Vebron’s village square and returns via the old bridge. Along the way, it follows the banks of the Tarnon; from the Can de l’Hospitalet plateau, there are views of the cliffs of the Causse Méjean. Compared with Les corniches de l’Hospitalet, the stated duration is an hour and a half longer; Broussous also specifies the elevation gain and loss. A small gorge forms beneath Vebron’s old bridge, where you can cool off.

Le Castelas offers a different perspective: this natural viewpoint sits on the cliffs of the Causse Méjean and looks out over the Cévennes. It stands 300 metres above the village of Les Vanels. Le Castelas can be reached on foot via a farm track; check local conditions before setting out.

Architectural history and film culture

The Church of Saint-Pierre de Vebron dates from the 12th or 13th century. In the 14th century, the priory of Vebron was dependent on the monastery of Sainte-Enimie. The Temple de Vébron features a range of architectural details side by side: a coffered ceiling, fine woodwork, monumental pulpits and elaborately crafted family pews with backrests.

The castles, too, offer their own historical and scenic highlights. Châteauroux Castle stands on a schist promontory overlooking the valley. The Catholic de Bernis family had the Château de Salgas rebuilt in the 18th century.

The Vébron International Film Festival has been held every year since 1988. Its official competition includes more than twelve hours of film screenings, with films from around the world. Some screenings take place outdoors and are followed by conferences and discussions. As programme details may change from one edition to another, check the announced dates before travelling.

During the Vébron Video Festival in the third week of July, the Temple de Vébron is used as a venue; admission is free. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the programme for that edition.
