Fournels can be explored on two scales: the architectural history of its monuments in the village and a circular trail that starts in Fournels and climbs to the Église de Termes. The Château combines a precise construction date with its location above three valleys; the Église Notre-Dame showcases Romanesque architecture and richly detailed furnishings. The trail adds a viewpoint overlooking the Margeride range and the volcanic Massif des Monts du Cantal to the cultural sites. For planning your trip, the choice is clear: would you like to focus on the historic buildings, or also include a circular trail with a climb?

Castle history and Romanesque church architecture

The Château de Fournels was built in 1573 under the reign of Charles IX by Jean bâtard d'Apcher, son of François Martin, Baron d'Apcher. It is classified as a historic monument and overlooks three valleys. Its patronage, classification and location offer different ways to explore it: through its origins, the castle’s historical significance and the surrounding landscape.

At the Église Notre-Dame de Fournels, different architectural details take centre stage. The Romanesque church has two levels, topped by a comb bell tower. Its furnishings were made by regional craftspeople and include an oak high altar and two tabernacles.

The Église Notre-Dame is the oldest monument in the village; its history dates back at least to 1145. This places its historical origins well before the Château was built in 1573. Comparing the two buildings gives a simple chronological perspective: the church represents the village’s earlier history, while the castle is associated with a precisely stated construction date and a named patron.

The Église Notre-Dame is open for individual visits at any time, free of charge and without a guide; a visit takes about 30 minutes on average. Check in advance whether it is possible to visit.

Circular trails with different points of interest

Cap sur l'église de Termes – Trail No. 33 is a circular trail that starts in Fournels and climbs to the Église de Termes at an altitude of 1,171 metres. The route also offers a viewpoint overlooking the Margeride range and the volcanic Massif des Monts du Cantal.

The Fournels heritage trail offers a different way to explore the area: nine information panels guide you through Fournels and its surroundings. Unlike Trail No. 33, which climbs in a loop to the Église de Termes and offers a viewpoint, this trail is based on information panels. In practical terms, one option focuses on the history of Fournels and its surroundings, while the other focuses on the climb, the church destination and the landscape views.
