A walking tour with 28 information stations, a memorial trail with 17 panels and around 60 historic doorways offer different ways to discover Mende. The Circuit du Patrimoine leads through the city centre and focuses on cultural heritage. “La résistance à Mende” draws attention to places directly connected to events and people of the Resistance. The choice therefore depends on the historical perspective you prefer: broader cultural heritage or remembrance of the Resistance.

The cathedral and traces of the city’s history

Construction of Notre-Dame & Saint-Privat de Mende Cathedral began in 1368 on the initiative of Pope Urban V, and it was consecrated in 1467. Inside are a Black Madonna dating from the 12th century and Aubusson tapestries from the 18th century. A visit to the building thus brings together different periods, from medieval history to furnishings added later.

Individual guided tours of the cathedral are offered from June to September and during school holidays. At other times, they are available by prior reservation. Check the dates if you would like to include a guided tour in your stay.

The historic centre also tells the story of different centuries through its architecture: it has around 60 documented historic doorways dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The Chapelle Saint-Dominique is the surviving part of the former Carmelite monastery that once extended across this quarter. Paintings from the 17th century came to light in the Chapelle des Pénitents when the altarpiece was moved. These places offer different points of interest: surviving monastic history and an art-historical discovery.

On the ground floor of the Musée du Gévaudan, interactive areas offer a playful way to discover the region. They complement the architectural and historical themes with an approach focused on exploring the region.

On foot to the Ermitage and views over Mende

The Chemin de croix connects Place du Foirail with the Ermitage Saint-Privat and is popular with walkers. The Ermitage can be reached on foot from the square along this trail. Its 14 renovated stations and viewpoints overlooking Mende are part of the route, as are the views of the city and surrounding countryside from the Ermitage. Those interested in this destination will find both a clearly described approach and views of the surrounding area.

A diocesan pilgrimage takes place at the Ermitage every year. If you would like to plan your visit around this event, check the date for the relevant year. The Croix du Mont-Mimat also offers a panoramic view over Mende, as well as an observation board. The arboretum, meanwhile, is a green walking route in the heart of the city. The three places have different focuses: a pilgrimage site and landscape views, a panorama with an observation board, and a green walk in the centre of Mende.

Activities and regional connections

For climbing enthusiasts, the Via Ferrata de Mende offers routes for all levels, from beginners to experienced climbers. On the Causse de Mende, there are family-friendly trails as well as more challenging routes for mountain bikes, electric mountain bikes and electric scooters. The two activities therefore differ both in the type of activity and in the routes on offer. Before making specific plans, check the current booking and supervision arrangements for the Via Ferrata, as well as the available routes and operators on the Causse.

Mende is one of the gateways to the “Cévennes, gorges & grands Causses” area, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural and natural heritage site since 2011. This regional connection adds another perspective to exploring the town, without equating its urban heritage sites and trails with the wider area. During a stay in Mende, you can therefore choose between historic walks, the trail to the Ermitage, a green walking route and the outdoor activities mentioned above.
