At Rocher de Trenze, the climbing area has 49 equipped routes; at the same time, trails in Vialas lead to historic hamlets, a striking granite landscape and a mining heritage. This makes it possible to discover the area from several perspectives: climbing, hiking, or focusing on culture and landscape. When planning, the main considerations are the requirements and themes of each route.
Rock and Hiking Trails
The climbing routes at Rocher de Trenze range in difficulty from 3C to 7B and are between 15 and 200 metres long. The climbing area is intended for trained, properly equipped climbers. The grades and lengths give a clear idea of the range of equipped routes available.
The Gourdouze trail is a difficult, yellow-marked PR route. It is 14.2311 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of about six and a half hours. It starts in Vialas. The trail passes through heather moorland, along paved paths and through a landscape of striking granite boulders, reaching the Rochers de Trenze. It is recommended for experienced hikers and has steep sections. The walking time makes this a hike for which a substantial part of the day should be set aside.
The Soleyrols loop offers a different landscape. It follows the Luech through a mineral-rich fault zone between schist and granite, near former mining sites. While the Gourdouze trail passes through heather moorland, along paved paths and among granite boulders, Soleyrols focuses on the river, geology and former mining activity.
Gentiâne also offers individually adaptable donkey hikes. Options include circular or point-to-point hikes, day trips and longer tours; the difficulty can also be adjusted. If you plan to take this option, check the current arrangements in advance, as they may change.
Hamlets and History
On the Sentier de découverte de Vialas, you can explore the historic hamlets and discover the special history of the Temple de Vialas. The temple was built from 1613 onwards, after permission to build it was granted in 1612. The dates refer to two different steps: first the permission, then the start of construction. If you plan to take the trail, check its current route beforehand, as route details may change.
At the Sentier du Bocard, galena, a silver-bearing lead ore, was processed using machinery in the 19th century. The Bocard site is protected as a historic monument. This adds a different historical focus to the temple’s construction history: the mechanised processing of ore.
Landscape Setting
Vialas has been part of Cévennes National Park since 1970. Since 2011, the area has been included among UNESCO’s agro-pastoral landscapes. These designations add a broader landscape and cultural context to the specific themes of the trails. You can therefore consider not only individual hikes, but also the destination’s wider landscape context when making your choice.
