Villelongue-d'Aude combines an old village center laid out in a circle with the Sainte-Barbe walk, whose points of interest include chapel architecture and protected traces of antiquity. The Boucle de Sainte Barbe includes the pre-Romanesque Chapelle Sainte-Barbe as a stop. At the same time, the local historical story stretches from a 12th-century grain mill to the war memorial to those who fell in the First World War. This places architectural history, routes and sites of remembrance side by side as different ways to explore the village.

Village Center and Sainte-Barbe Routes

The old village center of Villelongue-d'Aude is laid out in a circle. The parish church of Saint Félix preserves elements of Romanesque architecture. The Chapelle Sainte-Barbe is pre-Romanesque; it has a single-nave body and a square choir. Its Romanesque alterations include a semicircular apse at the end of the choir.

These terms describe different aspects of the building: “single-nave” describes a church body with one nave, while “square” describes the shape of the choir. The semicircular apse is another feature at the end of the choir; its classification as a Romanesque alteration links the original form with the building's history.

The Boucle de Sainte Barbe includes the chapel as a stop and can be combined with the Le Bayle route. The Sainte-Barbe route passes protected remains of a Gallo-Roman funerary monument. Those particularly interested in sacred architecture will find a specific focus in the chapel; the archaeological connection lies in the remains of the funerary monument. Parking is available near the starting point of the Sainte-Barbe walk. Check locally before setting out, as visitor facilities may change.

Silverwork, Memorial and Mill

The church in Villelongue-d'Aude preserves a silver pyx made between 1789 and 1798. It was classified as a protected object on April 23, 1979. Another silver item in the church is the ciborium, made by Parisian goldsmith Nicolas-Richard Masson between 1798 and 1809. The dates of these works therefore span the late 18th century and the first years of the 19th century.

The war memorial commemorates local people who died for France in 1914–1918. An iron statue of a soldier stands on a molded granite pedestal; the inscription plaque is marble. In its form and materials, this memorial is markedly different from the church's silverwork. Another historical trace is the Moulin Villelongue d'Aude, the remnant of a 12th-century grain mill.

Winegrowing and Cheese

Domaine de Capdepon farms 80 hectares of vineyards in the AOP Limoux for Blanquette, Crémant and wines. It is a family business, where the owners have grown grapes and made wine themselves for five generations. At Domaine de Soustrobe, most cheeses are shaped by hand using a ladle, following a traditional method. The farm keeps 80 goats year-round in semi-free-range conditions, using organic farming methods and avoiding intensive livestock farming.

The two producers offer different insights: at Capdepon, the focus is on vineyard area, the AOP and wine styles; at Soustrobe, it is on cheese shaping and goat husbandry. Business information on area, range and production may change; check current details before planning a trip.
