Soulatgé combines nature watching, village culture and local produce. Highlights include the Verdouble and the Gourg de l’Antre, the parish church of Notre-Dame, as well as crafts and temporary exhibitions. The market, brewery bar and seasonal boutique each have different schedules. When planning your stay, it is therefore worth treating these offerings not as a simultaneous programme, but as separate opportunities with suitable visiting times and flexible discoveries.

Nature along the Verdouble

The characteristic birdlife of Soulatgé includes golden eagles, Eurasian eagle-owls, woodlarks, ortolan buntings and European bee-eaters. The village’s natural heritage includes particularly diverse fauna and flora adapted to extreme conditions. The species listed are characteristic of the local birdlife; this does not mean that a particular sighting can be planned as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Another natural highlight is the Gourg de l’Antre, near the source of the Verdouble. The chasm formed when a vaulted roof collapsed. Underground waters that feed the Verdouble can be seen there. Check the access conditions on site before planning your visit.

The Verdouble runs for 46.7 kilometres between the commune of Soulatgé and Estagel, where it flows into the Agly. The river and the visible underground water are therefore distinct aspects of the natural heritage: the Gourg reveals water that feeds the Verdouble, while the river’s course is described beyond the commune as far as its confluence.

Building history, pottery and artists

The parish church of Notre-Dame de Soulatgé was built on the site of the former castle tower, reusing its walls. This architectural connection gives the place a tangible historical dimension: the walls of the former tower are part of the history of the present-day church site.

Local crafts are another highlight. For more than 30 years, Poterie du Verdouble has brought together the workshops of Nicole Pages-Lindner and Otto Lindner. They make decorative and functional stoneware pottery. The boutique is open seasonally and by appointment outside the season.

Atelier Remezo is a place for creating and exhibiting art in Soulatgé, in the Aude department. It regularly invites other artists and creatives to take part in temporary exhibitions. As individual exhibitions are held for a limited time, check the dates if you would like to plan your visit around one. The lanes of Soulatgé are also ideal for a stroll and for discovering artists—a way to include village life and art in your own walk.

Markets and local produce

The Petit Marché communal is a regular market of local producers held in the village square. It takes place on Wednesdays: from 6 to 8 p.m. in summer and from 5 to 7 p.m. in winter. If the market is a key reason for your trip, check the date and seasonal opening time in advance.

Beers are available directly from the brewery at Brasserie La Mandra. The brewery bar is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m.; check opening hours before your visit. At Miellerie Miel et une Fleur, you can sample and learn about honey and other bee products. Visits outside opening hours are possible by appointment. The market, brewery and honey house therefore offer different opportunities to discover local produce.

A cultural event in October

Every year in October, the Association Vivre à Soulatgé organises a performance in Soulatgé by the theatre group Vivons le théâtre en Corbières. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the performance date for the year you wish to visit. This helps distinguish the village’s fixed dates—such as the market and theatre—from seasonal offerings and visits arranged individually.
