Rieux-Minervois combines an unusual Romanesque church interior with traces of local history and visits to wineries. When looking for accommodation in Rieux-Minervois, it helps to consider your own travel interests: your stay might focus on the architecture of Sainte-Marie and the historic Way of St James, or revolve more around guided visits and trails on winery estates. The differences lie in the experiences themselves—from the striking interior to vineyards, cellars and countryside.
Rotonde and Romanesque capitals
The Rotonde Heptagonale Sainte Marie is protected as a historic monument and has an unusual interior layout. Its regular interior has 14 sides and is inscribed in a circle; a dome is supported by seven arches resting on seven pillars. This brings together clearly described geometry and the dome’s structure. The Romanesque capitals in the church of Sainte-Marie in Rieux-Minervois also have a specific artistic attribution: they were created by the Master of Cabestany. This brings Romanesque sculpture into focus alongside the architecture.
Planning a visit to Sainte-Marie
The church of Sainte-Marie can be visited from 1 April to 31 October, either with documentation or as part of a guided tour. Reception and ticket sales are at the Tourist Information Point next to the church, which is open Tuesday to Saturday. As visiting arrangements are seasonal, it is advisable to check current opening times and visiting options in advance.
Chapel, castle and townscape
The Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont chapel commemorates a sailor from the Noailles family’s vow: it was built in the 16th century and expanded in the 18th century. At the castle near the Argent Double, by contrast, the building’s history takes centre stage. It was built around 1175; surviving features include towers, a well courtyard, a window and lintels. The chapel’s origins are linked to a vow, while the castle’s construction date and surviving features shape how it is viewed.
The townscape includes shady old lanes with vaulted passageways. The Vieux Pont de Rieux is also a notable historic structure: the bridge has three arches. Together with the older buildings, the lanes and bridge offer another perspective on the character of the town, without limiting sightseeing to church architecture.
The Way of St James and getting there
The historic Way of St James, the Via des Piémonts from Arles, passes through Rieux-Minervois. The village can also be reached on foot from Carcassonne via the GR®78, which is marked in red and white. For travel by public transport, take the train to Carcassonne and then continue on RTCA bus line A. Before setting out, check the current route, trail markings and public transport connections: route markings, access and transport services may change.
Wineries between vineyard and cellar
Domaine Saint-Antoine lies between the drained Étang de Marseillette, rocky slopes and Mediterranean garrigue. Fig, almond and olive trees, as well as truffle oaks, are part of the estate’s biodiversity and natural setting. The estate’s trails can be explored on foot or by bicycle.
Domaine Saint-Antoine offers guided tours of its wine cellar, followed by a visit to the sales and tasting cellar. Check availability of visits in advance. Domaine des Homs offers a different kind of guided tour: it leads from the vineyards to the wine cellar and explains how the vines are tended along the way. The focus therefore differs: at Saint-Antoine, walking or cycling the trails is also part of the experience, while at Homs, the tour includes an explanation of vine care.
