Thézan-des-Corbières can be explored through specific themes: winegrowing, garrigue, agricultural experiences and architectural history. For your plans, it is important to note that visiting arrangements vary. At Château de Saint-Estève, tours and wine tastings are available year-round; at Ferme du Montagut, family visits depend on opening hours, and goat milking is by appointment. At Château Aiguilloux, summer winemakers’ lunches in the park are an additional option. You can therefore choose based on whether you want to focus on a tasting, a farm visit or a seasonal meal.
Wineries and regional highlights
The Latham family welcomes visitors to Château de Saint-Estève year-round for tours and wine tastings. Confirm the specific visiting arrangements before you arrive. The estate’s vineyards cover 120 hectares; some lie within the Cru Boutenac terroir. The legacy of Henri de Monfreid also shapes the château: the adventurer and writer came from this region. Saint-Estève thus combines wine tastings with a cultural connection. Château Aiguilloux offers a different focus: its 125-hectare estate includes 37 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by 95 hectares of forest and garrigue. Its offerings include catering year-round and winemakers’ lunches in the park during summer. Check the dates of the seasonal lunches in advance. While tours and tastings are the focus at Saint-Estève, Aiguilloux combines winegrowing, forest and garrigue with seasonal dining.
Farm visits and goat products
Since 2007, Ferme du Montagut has kept a herd of 100 Alpine and Saanen goats in a protected garrigue landscape. The farm makes various cheeses bearing the “Pays Cathare” label, including Ecu, Ecusson and Tomme. You can also taste natural yoghurt, fresh milk and aromatic herbs there; the availability of individual products may vary. Families can visit during opening hours. The goats are milked daily at 8 a.m. by appointment. If you are interested in both farm products and animal husbandry, you can get two different insights here: taste the farm’s own products and visit a working goat farm. An agreed appointment is essential for milking.
Architectural history and landscape
Cellier Roque d'Agnel connects wine with architectural history. The wine cellar in Thézan was probably built in 1919 by Jules-Pierre Reverdy. Villeneuve carried out the extension in several stages; the year 1951 is engraved in the cement of the staircase structure. So, alongside the probable construction date, details of the building’s later history also come into view.
A challenging cycling loop
For a challenging ride, the “Entre Montagut et La Recaoufa” mountain bike loop offers a clear measure of difficulty: it is 59 kilometres long, has 1,798 metres of elevation gain and is rated very difficult. You can start in Thézan at the Communauté de Communes car park. From there, the route leaves the village via Rue du Moulin à Vent. Its distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating make it a demanding choice, rather than a short excursion between other visits. Check the trail conditions before setting off. The “Découverte du Pays Corbières Minervois” passes through charming villages and unspoilt landscapes, adding a scenic perspective to the specific themes of wine, farm life and architectural history.
