Caunes-Minervois brings together the history of an abbey founded in 780, marble, quarries and walks. During your stay, you can explore the area’s culture and nature through a range of local themes, from the abbey and marble quarrying to guided nature discovery and walking trails.
Abbey and Local Activities
The Abbey of Caunes-Minervois was founded in 780 by the monk Anian. The site of the former abbey is protected as a historic monument. Some parts are classified, while others are listed; the protection covers the entire site. The Écomusée Marbre et Terroir presents two activities emblematic of Caunes-Minervois: marble quarrying and winegrowing. Alongside the abbey’s history, it offers another cultural way to explore the area, this time through two local activities.
Explore Marble and Nature
At the Terralbes-Est site, the Safari Marbre is a guided discovery trail. It also includes a nature-focused look at local wildlife and plant life. As arrangements may change, check the current details of this guided activity in advance.
The Jardin des Marbrières has information panels about the quarries and their marble, as well as the local flora. It also features sculptures, a marble analemmatic sundial, dry-stone walls and a viewpoint over the valley. The focus here is on both the history of stone and on plants and crafted objects.
The Carrière du Roy was already being quarried by the Romans; large blocks of marble were extracted there under Louis XIV. Marble can also be seen elsewhere, including in the columns of the Grand Trianon at Versailles, as well as in the Louvre, the Opéra Garnier and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.
Walks and Access to the Carrière du Roy
The Sentier du Marbre – Boucle de Caunes is a moderately difficult 7.3 km circular walk, taking about three hours. It starts and ends at the Parking de l'Europe in Caunes-Minervois. Trail conditions and parking options may change; check them before your walk.
Another option is the 6 km yellow-marked walk from Caunes-Minervois to the Carrière du Roy via the Chemin du Vieux Cros. The two routes differ in format: the loop returns to its starting point, while the second walk leads to the quarry. Check the markings and trail conditions before setting out.
The Carrière du Roy is four kilometres north of Caunes-Minervois. From car park P1, it is a five-minute walk and is freely accessible via the Route des carrières. As access conditions may change, check the local situation before travelling.
Chapel and Religious History
The Notre-Dame-du-Cros chapel lies at the foot of gorges and marble quarries. The present-day chapel dates from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries; marble is used to remarkable effect inside. Its setting and architecture offer different insights into local history.
