The Canal du Midi runs through La Redorte for a length of 5,090 metres. This tangible connection gives the town a clear thematic focus: the waterway, architectural history and nature can be explored from different perspectives. Each of the destinations described offers its own highlights, without requiring a fixed itinerary.
The Canal du Midi as a guiding thread
The Canal du Midi was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. In La Redorte, this wider connection can be linked to specific places. The Port-la-Fabrique marina is the starting point for a walk to the Épanchoir de l’Argent-Double and the Dînée. The latter lies less than one kilometre downstream from the port of La Redorte, before the Métairie du Bois bridge. As a former Dînée, it served as a lunchtime stop for the “barque de poste”. A walk therefore brings together two different aspects of the canal’s history: a structure and a place whose former function was linked to boat traffic.
Architectural styles and historical dates
The Épanchoir de l’Argent-Double was completed in 1694 to plans by Vauban. It consists of a series of eleven arches made of dressed stone. The structure can be understood through several specific features: its date of construction, the number of arches and the material used. For architecture enthusiasts, its form is therefore as tangible as its historical date.
The Château de La Redorte and the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-liens offer further distinctive features. The château is an 18th-century neoclassical building with an ornamented triangular pediment and four square towers. The present-day church was built around 1849 and has a portal in the neo-Romanesque style. The dates thus range from the Épanchoir in 1694, through the 18th-century château, to the church around 1849. Anyone wishing to compare architectural history can look at different forms and periods side by side, rather than viewing all the sights as a single unified ensemble.
Hiking route, walk and waterways
The destinations mentioned also differ in the routes they offer. The walk from Port-la-Fabrique leads to the Épanchoir and the Dînée; the “Les Douze Ponts (Épanchoir)” hiking route connects the Canal du Midi with the Estagnol nature reserve. The main point to consider when choosing is therefore the direction of each route: one description names two places connected with the canal’s history, while the other highlights the link between the canal and the nature reserve. The two options can be distinguished by their specific points of interest, without assuming a particular duration or level of difficulty.
Another option for enjoying nature and leisure is Lac de la Métairie du Bois. This shaded, easily accessible body of water covers just over two hectares and is suitable for fishing with a float rod. It adds a different activity to the walks: here, the focus is on a body of water rather than a route or a structure. The “Jouez à découvrir La Redorte” activity also includes two booklets, one for adults and one for young people. This division gives the activity a clear structure for different target groups, without assuming any particular way of taking part.
