The Canal de Jonction is part of the Canal du Midi UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Sallèles-d'Aude, two distinct cultural experiences take center stage: the history of the canal and the Gallo-Roman pottery history of Amphoralis. Historic buildings, markets and festivals also feature, and may influence when you choose to travel.

Canal Structures and Local History

Sallèles-d'Aude's marina offers mooring facilities in the town and at Gailhousty. This is a practical consideration when planning a trip by water; berth availability may change. The Gailhousty site includes a lock, an overflow weir, a bridge and a dry dock.

Historic structures visitors can discover in the town include the canal bridge built by Vauban and an Eiffel-style footbridge, which was fully renovated in 2020. The two structures offer different perspectives on the history of bridges. Another historical link leads to the Château, where Francis I stayed.

Amphoralis: Pottery and Reconstructions

Amphoralis is a museum site above the excavations of a Gallo-Roman pottery workshop that operated from the 1st to the 3rd century. An outdoor trail leads to reconstructed kilns and a Gallo-Roman dwelling. Both were built based on the remains discovered. A visit therefore offers a look at two different aspects of the archaeological site: production facilities and daily life.

Amphoralis is accessible by boat or bicycle. The Canal de Jonction runs near the site; Amphoralis also has the Accueil Vélo label, and boats can moor there. Check the specific access details before your visit.

Markets, Festivals and Regional Culture

The Marché des Potiers takes place every year on August 14 and 15 at Place de la République. Around 40 selected potters gather there. The Eau, Terre et Vin festival takes place along the canal on the third weekend of July and includes tastings of local products. The Festival de Cornemuses showcases the Boudègue, known as Bodega in Occitan, a traditional bagpipe of the region. If you plan to attend a festival, check that year's programme before travelling.

Outings and Accommodation Planning

La Balade d'Amont is a 10 km out-and-back route that takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. It ends with a guided tasting: choose between wine or organic or local fruit juice, served with spreads. The distance and duration provide a practical framework for planning your day; check the details of the offer before booking.

When planning your accommodation, it makes a difference whether a particular festival is the reason for your trip or whether you mainly want to explore the canal's history and Amphoralis. If you're attending a festival, choose your travel dates according to that year's programme. For a themed stay, decide on your focus first, then look for hotels for the dates that suit you.
