Bellegarde-du-Razès combines a fortified circular village with wine country and routes for different kinds of exploration. The village lies on a wooded hill watered by the Sou; vineyards shape the surrounding area. This gives you two focal points for planning: traces of the fortifications in the village and routes through the landscape or to a viewpoint.

Wine Country and Far-Reaching Views

The municipal area is mostly planted with vineyards, where wine from the Malepère AOC appellation is produced. Viticulture therefore shapes the municipality’s agricultural character. From the Crête de Bellegarde-du-Razès, the view extends across the vineyards to the church towers of Routier and the villages of Haut-Razès. The panorama brings together vineyard plots and the village scenes of the wider Haut-Razès area.

Circular Village and Preserved Traces

Bellegarde-du-Razès is a circulade: a fortified circular village surrounded by ditches. The term describes a distinctive village layout in which the circular form and fortifications go hand in hand. The former seigneurial castle stood within the fortifications, was converted into living quarters, and survives only in a few traces. Remains of an old ring wall have also been preserved. The Church of Saint-Clément is Romanesque in style and has furnishings. The cultural heritage therefore ranges from the fortified village layout to a specific example of Romanesque architecture.

On Foot: The Circular Route and the Crête

The Tour du Razès is a two- to three-day circular route through several circular villages and landscapes of vineyards, meadows, fields, and forests. Bellegarde-du-Razès is one of the circular villages along the route. To reach the Crête de Bellegarde-du-Razès, take the Route du Moulin and then follow a GR7 trail to a geodetic marker. The routes differ in form: the Tour du Razès links several villages and landscape types, while the route to the Crête leads to a named destination. Check trail conditions before setting out; conditions on the route to the Crête may vary.

Cycling on the Voie Verte

The Voie Verte in the Limouxin follows a disused railway line with a gentle gradient and offers a way to discover Bellegarde-du-Razès, its remarkable cultural heritage, and its character as a fortified circular village. Parking for the Voie Verte is available at Bellegarde-du-Razès station; check parking conditions before you arrive if needed. The route is accessible to people with disabilities. Check local surface conditions before setting out. As part of “Mai à vélo,” a cycling day was held in Bellegarde-du-Razès in 2026 for the fifth consecutive year.

Another Walking Theme in the Limouxin

The Limouxin also has the “Histoires d’Eau” walking trail, with 14 panels about different uses of the natural resource of water. While the Tour du Razès links several villages and landscapes, this themed trail focuses on how water is used. It offers a different perspective on the region from the village layouts and wine country around Bellegarde-du-Razès.
