Peyrefitte-du-Razès offers hiking trails with different focuses and several specific cultural highlights in the village. The Sentier des Métairies starts in the village and passes former farms and historic sites; the Sentier du Razès runs from village to village. The church, village square and a medieval house add sacred art and architectural history to the trails.

Hiking amid the farming past and the landscape

The Sentier des Métairies starts in the village of Peyrefitte-du-Razès and is 8.5 kilometres long. It runs along a wooded slope in the Ambronne Valley. Former farms and historic sites lie along the way; information panels explain how farmers and former residents lived. Along the route, landscape and history intertwine: the wooded slope is part of the trail, while the panels and historic sites draw attention to farming life and former residents.

The Sentier du Razès offers a different focus. This hiking route runs from village to village, alongside grain fields, vineyards or meadows. In the distance, views open up towards the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. The landscape along the way and the distant mountain ranges can thus be enjoyed side by side.

If you choose a hike based on its focus, the difference can be summed up briefly: the Sentier des Métairies offers a defined route and theme through its 8.5-kilometre length and information panels; the Sentier du Razès is shaped by its village-to-village route and distant views.

Sacred art in the church

The church in Peyrefitte-du-Razès houses the 18th-century sculpture “Vierge de Pitié”. It is classified as a protected movable cultural object. The church’s altarpiece ensemble includes three paintings.

The central painting depicts Christ on the cross between John, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary. On the left is “The Education of the Virgin”, and on the right, “The Beheading of John the Baptist”. The arrangement places the Crucifixion painting in the centre, flanked by two other subjects.

The sculpture dates from the 18th century; the altarpiece ensemble was listed as a protected movable cultural object in 1994. This clearly distinguishes the date of the work from the listing of the ensemble.

Village square and architectural history

In front of the church, in the village square, stands a bust of Marianne on a monolithic column. Monolithic means that the column is made from a single stone; it is therefore as much a part of the described feature as the bust.

A medieval house with carved corbels depicting human heads stands in the church square. The house draws attention to a detail different from the artworks in the church: carved architectural ornament rather than paintings or sculpture. Together, sacred works, a feature in the village square and an architectural detail of the medieval house come together here.
