The history of the main village of Gaja and the architectural history of Villemartin mark different periods; wine experiences and a described route with views of Limoux complete the picture of Gaja-Et-Villedieu. When planning your visit, it is also important to note the conditions of access: Villemartin is privately owned, visits to Teramas Maro are available on request, and you should check the route description before setting out.
Gaja: Main Village and Local History
The main village of Gaja sits on a hill above the Razès plain. The village’s origins date back to the 12th century. Gaja was a fortified castle surrounded by moats, and remains of it have been preserved. Its elevated position is a distinctive feature of the landscape, while the castle remains point to its former fortifications.
The church in Gaja-Et-Villedieu houses a baptismal font made of speckled red marble from Caunes-Minervois.
Domaine de Villemartin
Domaine de Villemartin is privately owned; visitors should not assume unrestricted access. By decree dated 22 April 2015, the cloister, adjoining buildings and park, including its structures and the architectural remains within it, were listed as historic monuments. The château itself is excluded.
The estate contains reconstructed fragments of a 12th-century cloister and chapel. Around 1830, sculptural elements and columns were brought to the estate and rebuilt there according to a slightly modified layout.
The dates provide distinct points in the chronology: Gaja’s origins and the fragments of the cloister and chapel date to the 12th century; the sculptural elements and columns were rebuilt around 1830. The decision to list the cloister, buildings and park as historic monuments followed in 2015.
