A simple lock on the Canal de la Robine, the building and pilgrimage history of the Chapelle Saint-Laurent, and horse-riding experiences give Moussan several specific points of interest for a stay. Water engineering, culture and activities on horseback each offer a different focus for planning.

The Lock and Waterways

The Écluse de Moussoulens in Moussan is a simple lock on the Canal de la Robine. Since 1682, it has regulated the flow of the Aude. Another aspect of water engineering concerns the division of water between the Aude, Cesse, the connecting canal to the Canal du Midi, and the Canal de la Robine. The lock serves a single regulatory function; the division involves several named waterways and canals.

The Sentier de l’Écluse de Moussoulens runs along the banks where the river and canals meet. This gives the route a different focus from the lock: it follows the waterside landscape, while the lock is primarily concerned with regulating the flow.

Hills Around Moussan

The ZNIEFF “Collines de Moussan” encompasses coniferous forests on the hillsides, extensive farmland and more open grassland with notable plant species. The landscape is therefore not shaped by forests alone: farmland and open grassland are also part of it. Unlike the riverside Sentier, this area is defined by the diversity of its hillside terrain.

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent has a single-nave body and a choir with a flat end. A raised, chamfered triumphal arch separates the two spaces. The architectural layout can thus be traced through three elements: the nave, the separating arch and the choir. “Single-nave” describes the layout of the nave; “flat end” describes the shape of the choir.

The chapel became a pilgrimage site and served as a stop for pilgrims and monks travelling between the Cistercian estate of Fontcalvy and Fontfroide Abbey. After a long period of decline, the Comité Saint-Laurent association bought the chapel, which was largely in ruins at the time, in 1965 and began its restoration.

Notre-Dame Along the Sentier

The Sentier de l’Écluse de Moussoulens also passes Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. The church was built in the 13th century on the site of a former plague hospital. Its front gable bears the motto “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité”. The two churches have different historical associations: Saint-Laurent is linked to a pilgrimage stop, while Notre-Dame is associated with the site of the former plague hospital and the motto on its front gable.

Horse Riding and Lessons

Les Écuries de Taillevent in Moussan offers rides and horse-riding tours along trails between vineyards, pine forests, the river and the canal. While the Sentier focuses on the riverside route, the riding trails pass through several types of landscape. Guided pony rides leading ponies by hand are available for younger children. Riding lessons are also offered in arenas by a qualified riding instructor. Pony rides and lessons are different activities; if you’re planning one, it’s a good idea to check dates with the centre in advance.
