Pennautier brings together the history of the Château and four circular routes, whose distances and estimated times offer practical guidance for planning. There is also the château park, classified as a Jardin Remarquable. This gives you two different ways to explore the area: cultural history and routes that can be compared based on their stated distances and durations.

Château de Pennautier: History of the Building and Visits

Construction of the Château de Pennautier began in 1620, with the main building phase in the first quarter of the 17th century. Its style is influenced by Versailles, with connections to the architect Le Vau and the landscape architect Le Nôtre. These details place the building’s history in context and make its Versailles-inspired style a distinctive feature of a stay in Pennautier.

The park also belongs to the Château de Pennautier and is classified as a Jardin Remarquable. It is open to visitors all year round, free of charge. The interior of the Château, on the other hand, can only be visited as part of a guided tour. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to confirm these conditions before your trip. This lets you plan a visit to the freely accessible park separately from a guided tour of the interior.

Another Historical Perspective: The Cloth Manufactory

The history of the cloth manufactory adds a perspective on the textile trade to the history of the building. Pierre Louis de Reich de Pennautier founded the manufactory in 1696. In 1729, it was granted the title of royal manufactory; under Tarbouriech’s management, it developed into one of the region’s most important manufactories. The histories of the Château and the manufactory offer different points of interest, without requiring a combined visit itinerary.

Compare Four Circular Routes by Distance and Duration

At 3.5 km and one hour, the Bois de Pech Bruyer circular route is the shortest of the four and also has the shortest stated duration. At the other end of the comparison is the Circuit de la Louve: it is 9.5 km long and takes about two hours and 40 minutes. This means the longest of the stated routes also has the longest estimated duration.

Two other routes have more similar durations: the Circuit du canal is 7.5 km long and takes about two hours. It leads to the La Douce lock and continues to the double lock at Herminis. The Les ponts de la Bastide Rougepeyre circular route covers 8.5 km and also takes about two hours. This estimate does not include a visit to the Bastide. The two routes therefore offer a useful comparison: they have similar stated durations, even though the Circuit du canal is one kilometre shorter.

Check the route conditions locally. For planning your time, also note that the stated duration of the Les ponts de la Bastide Rougepeyre circular route explicitly excludes a visit to the Bastide.
