Those looking to compare short and challenging hikes will find very different options in Durban-Corbières. The village lies in the Corbières Massif at the foot of the Pyrenees. Its sunny, rugged hills, with garrigue, forests and vineyards, stretch all the way to the Mediterranean. There is also the Château de Durban and trails through the old village. You can therefore plan your stay around the landscape, the length of your hike or historical discoveries.
Compare hikes by effort
The hike to the Moulin de la Cascade is 3.9 kilometres long, easy, and includes 98 metres of elevation gain. It takes about two hours, making it a manageable time commitment. If you are looking for a longer route of moderate difficulty, consider the Sentier Cathare from Durban-Corbières to Embres-et-Castelmaure: this route covers 10.4 kilometres and has 606 metres of elevation gain. The distance, difficulty rating and elevation gain show the difference between the two hikes.
A significantly greater challenge is the full Sentier Cathare stage from Durban-Corbières to Tuchan. It is 27 kilometres long, takes about 7 hours and 50 minutes, is rated difficult and includes 1,075 metres of elevation gain. The route plan divides this long, difficult section into two parts: Durban-Corbières–Embres-et-Castelmaure and Embres-et-Castelmaure–Tuchan. Check the current route conditions before setting out. When planning, it makes a significant difference whether you are considering an easy hike of about two hours or this long stage.
Trails in the old village and traces of history
On the GR®367, the streets of the old village, intended mostly for pedestrians, lead to the Fort district and the Chapelle Saint Hippolyte. Another walk leads to the ruins of the Chapelle Sainte Ruphine. It is not marked with yellow signs; bear this in mind when navigating. The two walks have specific destinations, but differ in their descriptions and markings.
The Château de Durban provides another historical highlight. Its remains were listed as a historic monument by decree on 28 April 1926. The château is also associated with the “Vieux Durban” discovery trail. This offers two distinct starting points for exploration: the historic monument itself and a named walking route.
