Belcaire combines hiking trails through forests with a spring-fed lake surrounded by mountains and striking traces of the town’s history. Six moderately challenging hiking trails start here; supervised swimming is also available at Lac de Belcaire in summer. You’ll also find specific trail information and historical details to help you decide how to balance nature and culture when planning your trip.

Hiking with specific trail information

Six moderately challenging hiking trails start from Belcaire and pass through a variety of forests. The Tour du Bouichet is a marked hike covering 7 kilometres, rated moderate, with a duration of 3 hours. This information gives you a concrete basis for estimating how long the hike will take. Trail conditions may vary, so check them locally before setting out. The network of trails is characterised by its moderately challenging nature and varied forests, while the Tour du Bouichet is described specifically in terms of distance, difficulty rating and duration.

Forest scenery and panoramic views

Belcaire’s hiking landscape includes extensive old state forests of fir, beech, Scots pine, lime and ash trees. On the Parcours Pic des Rives, the forest theme is complemented by a panorama from the viewpoint and an orientation board. Around twenty signs along the trail also help you identify the main forest tree species. The focus is therefore both on the landscape views and on taking a closer look at the trees. If you enjoy combining a panorama with a nature theme on a hike, this is a specific point to consider when planning your trip.

Lac de Belcaire in summer

Lac de Belcaire is spring-fed and surrounded by mountains. Supervised swimming is available there in July and August. This seasonal period is important when planning your trip if swimming is one of your interests. The lake offers a different focus from the hiking trails and forest paths: here, the emphasis is on summer swimming, while the hikes described offer different distances, difficulty ratings and forest landscapes.

Castle history and church architecture

Belcaire was built around an 11th-century castle. Only ruins remain today of the town’s former military castle, after it was set on fire by the Huguenots. The castle’s history thus spans the town’s founding and the ruins that remain.

The church also has specific architectural details. Its Baroque altarpiece is made of polychrome, gilded wood and dates from the end of the reign of Louis XIV. Polychrome means decorated in several colours; together with the gilding, this describes the altarpiece’s material and finish. The crenellated bell tower was built in 1884 and gives the church the appearance of a fortress. This building therefore offers both a dated architectural feature and a historic furnishing to explore.

A local product

The Patane from the Pays de Sault adds a local-product angle to the nature and culture themes. It is known for its nutty flavour, the quality of its flesh and its long shelf life. Taken together, the hiking trails, seasonal swimming, details of the castle and church, and this product offer different ways to understand Belcaire as a destination.
