Château-Landon can be explored through different traces of its history: defensive structures, religious buildings and local limestone each tell a different part of the story. The Tour Saint-Thugal is part of the town’s defensive system. The Saint-André gate is a surviving remnant of a former priory. The distinction is clear: one is about fortifications, the other about a former priory.

Defences and Abbey History

Saint-Séverin Abbey was founded in the 6th century. At the end of the 12th century, the support of Philippe Auguste probably played an important role in its extensive transformation, which gave it a fortress-like appearance. The early foundation and the later transformation thus stand out as two clearly distinct historical phases. In the fortified town, a square tower is considered the remains of a former basilica dedicated to Saint Thugal.

For planning your visit, access arrangements are important: the abbey is not open for visits, but visitors can enter its park. As access conditions may change, check the information before your visit.

Church Architecture as a Distinct Highlight

The Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption was listed as a historic monument in 1840. Its 57-metre-high bell tower is considered unique in the French landscape; the church also brings together four centuries of architecture. Two perspectives on the building therefore stand side by side: the height of the tower and its long architectural evolution. The 1840 listing adds a separate historical date to this perspective.

Medieval Walking Tour and Riverside Landscape

The Circuit découverte de la Cité Médiévale de Château-Landon includes 12 tourist information panels and an orientation panel with QR codes. Signage and digital content may be updated, so please check the information on site.

The circuit offers panoramic views of the monuments, Parc de la Tabarderie and the Fusain River. There are 17 washhouses along the banks of the Fusain. This view of Château-Landon therefore focuses not only on individual buildings, but also on the park and riverside landscape.

Limestone and Local Produce

La Maison de la pierre presents the history of Château-Landon limestone: from the formation of the very compact lacustrine limestone 35 million years ago to the stone’s use in bridges and other major Parisian buildings. Its geological formation and subsequent use offer two distinct perspectives on time. The limestone thus connects natural history with architectural history, extending the focus beyond individual churches or fortifications.

Château-Landon’s town-centre market offers a different highlight, with local produce for sale. Regional products thus complement architecture, history and landscape with a culinary dimension.
